A Large, Rare13 Dial Early 1900s W&H School/Railway. Single Fusee Clock – GWO. Overall width 16.5, Dialwidth 13, Depth 5. This well-known company originally founded in 1825, were also involved in optical instrument manufacture. Were considered the finest clockmakers in the Victorian era. They were based in several towns in Germanys Black Forest region. The company was established in1810 by Thomas Winterhalder in Friedenweiler, southern Germany. Hence the trade mark W & H. Sch clearly visible on the movement. The large heavy metal cream 13 dial. (much rarer than the normal 12 dial) is in very good condition. It has the appearance of being recently professionally restored, is surrounded by a large section 23mm deep brass bezel and displays the large black hands and Roman numerals to good advantage. The bezel hinge still allows the glass door to close well on its brass clasp. The glass, which would appear to be a later replacement is 3mm thick and therefore stronger than the more normal 2mm thickness. The high quality 8-day W & H Fusee movement. Really is a beautifully neat, well-engineered piece of German craftsmanship. It has been bench tested for several full spring cycles and shows very good time-keeping. It comes complete with key and original W & H pendulum. The beautifully polished all-wood oak case with superb grain. Has a side opening door and a bottom door for pendulum access, both complete with brass closures. The back box is secured with 4 matching pegs. Altogether, this well-proportioned antique timepiece is in remarkably good operating condition and considering the unusual dial size, and the rarely found smaller than usual high quality movement is both collectible and capable of enhancing any room in either a domestic or office setting.
