Wonderful and rare antique French doll, Jumeau Triste Doll, on early French Composition Ball Jointed Body with straight wrists, 24 tall. She is known as the long face Jumeau, as she has a wistful expression. She was only made from. 1893 to 1898, by the French sculptor Carrier-Belleuse, as commissioned by Jumeau to make this very special doll. She wears a wonderful silk lined, wine red velvet & lace dress, with a bebe bonnet. She has a full slip and pantaloons with lace. She has all her fingers, Closed mouth, Incised on the back of her head is “11”. This Jumeau Triste is one of the most stunning examples of this rare and much sought after antique French doll. She has one of the most beautiful faces of this model. Her bisque head shows no chips or cracks. There is a restoration inside front top of head that is not visible outside of the face. There is a hairline inside top right of head that is not visible on the outside of the face. The body has been repainted. She has one earring, applied ears. She has fixed bulging brown eyes, silk stockings, leather shoes. A beautiful blond wig with long curls, marked in label 100% cheveux naturels. Extremely Rare Early Islamic Rock Crystal Chess piece c1000AD Egypt. We are delighted to offer this rare and early Islamic rock crystal deeply carved chess or gaming piece 9th-11th Century. This delightful and rare rock crystal chess piece is very tactile and is beautifully carved. The deeply carved bevelled cuts have a’u’ shape and the overall appearance is very pleasing. There is a horizontal stepped cut at the base and it has been suggested that a band of gold or silver would have been around this section to differentiate the two sides in a chess game (see Al Sabah Catalogue of Early Islamic Chess and Gaming Pieces by Deborah Freeman Fahid, London 2018). Rock crystal has long been surrounded by mystery and myths with Bishops instructing crusaders to leave everything behind except rock crystal vessels during the medieval wars. This is how various rock crystal pieces ended up in Cathedrals throughout Europe in the Middle Ages (see Fahid, 2018). Rock crystal was thought to have magical properties such as changing colour if the liquid poured into it was poisoned. Chess is known as the Game of Kings as who else had the time and felt secure enough to play such an absorbing game in ancient times. Ancient chess and gaming pieces were made for the elite in society and the materials, amount of carving involved reflected this. Early Islamic chess pieces have a track record for attracting record amounts when they come up for sale. The Sotheby’s example is very similar apart from the additional design elements such as the vertical hatching which would mark it out as the’King’. This piece has been in the same private collection for several decades, safely stored in a display cabinet. It is housed in a purpose made domed wooden box that is over 200 years old with a collector’s label on the underside from the same period. The name on the label is from a collector who lived in England and who is recorded in the 1771 population census (full details on request). This piece stands just 4cm in height but is a true heavyweight among ancient chess pieces. There is some wear such as small chips around the piece as shown on the images above. This beautifully carved piece also has some minor inclusions in the crystal that can be seen from the underside. However, this piece is around 95% clear and has no internal fissures which are often found in this type of carved rock crystal. From a Private North of England Collection. This is a lovely, large example of 19th century spongeware pottery mug / tankard, with sponged decoration in pink and green. Rare to find a piece of this size. Applied handle with moulded leaf termini. 11 cm high, 11 cm base diameter. Apart from two old stable hairlines to the rim, minor stains. Light glaze crazing and appears to be stained crazing on the base. It is in very good condition, consistent with its age. Please refer to close-up pictures to assess glaze effects and condition as they form part of the description. Please excuse the camera reflections. Rare Early 20th Century Oxford University Metal Bound Wooden Expedition Crate. The crate was originally used by Oxford University Exploration Club, mountaineering Expedition To The Andes Of Peru, and dates to around 1905 – 1910. Incredibly it survived and it still in usable condition. The crate was produced by Venesta Boxes and Barrels of a London. Venesta was founded in 1898 and the first company to import plywood. The company gained special notoriety after they supplied the crates for two historic Artic expeditions. The first was Ernest Shackletons Nimrod expedition, and second Captain Robert Falcon Scotts ill fated Terra Nova expedition. The history of this crate is very significant and its ties to both Oxford University and the company Venesta make a must for any collector. With two closing latches to both sides, and metal bound for durability. Stamped with the expedition information to the top. Stamped with the makers name to two sides. A perfect coffee table or side table and a real talking piece. We discovered a pair of these very rare boxes, the listing is for one box. 47cm wide x 37cm deep x 33cm tall.
