RARE SET OF 2 LARGE EARLY 19TH CENTURY FRENCH ENAMEL PORTRAIT BUTTONS IN LEATHER PRESENTATION CASE. HELLO , THIS LISTING IS FOR A VERY RARE SET OF 2 LARGE EARLY 19TH CENTURY FRENCH ENAMEL BUTTONS IN LATER VICTORIAN LEATHER PRESENTATION CASE. THIS WONDERFUL AND RARE SET OF FRENCH BUTTONS ARE MADE TO PAY TRIBUTE TO MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE OPERA ” ROSINA “. ROSINA IS A 1782 COMIC OPERA BY WILLIAM SHIELD. THESE PORTAIT BUTTONS PORTRAY THE CHARACTERS ROSINA AND BELVILLE. SHE CUT OUT AND SAVED THEIR ORIGINAL CATALOG DESCRIPTION WHICH READS : PAIR FRENCH ENAMELED BUTTONS EARLY XIX CENTURY. OVAL SHAPE WITH PAINTED PORTRAIT INSCRIBED ” ROSINA AND BELVILLE “. THEY WERE LOT # 412. THEY ARE JUST A BIT OVER 2 INCHES HIGH X 1 1/ 2 INCH WIDE. THEY ARE IN EXCELLENT UNTOUCHED CONDITION. THEY HAVE THE CRAZING TO THE ENAMEL YOU WOULD EXPECT TO SEE ON BUTTONS MORE THAN 200 YEARS OLD. THERE ARE SOME CRIMPS TO THE BRASS FRAMES , BUT I THINK THIS HAPPEND WHEN THE FRAMES WERE MOLDED AROUND THE TIN BACKING , NOT DAMAGE. THEY COME HOUSED IN A LATER FRENCH VICTORIAN PERIOD LEATHER PRESENTATION CASE THAT MY GREAT AUNT HAD CUSTOM FITTED ESPECIALLY TO DISPLAY THESE BUTTONS. A WONDERFUL AND RARE PAIR OF MUSEUM QUALITY BUTTONS FOR AN ADVANCED COLLECTION. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING! My personal standards are high , so I strive to research , describe and picture all items in my auctions as accurately as possible. Most items are vintage or antique and therefore normal ware from age and use is to be expected. If any imperfections or damage is present other than normal ware , it will be mentioned and pictured in the listing. All items are carefully and thoughtfully packed to ensure safe arrival. VERY RARE & QUITE EARLY A. PUGIN DESIGNED MINTON TILE. THIS IS A LOVELY QUITE RARE ENCAUSTIC TILE MADE AT THE MINTON & Co FACTORY IN THE EARLY PART OF THE COMPANY’S OUT PUT (PROBABLY 1850’s/60’s – SEE CRISPNESS OF DESIGN AND THAT OF THE REVERSE LETTERING) AND WAS DESIGNED BY AGUSTUS WELBY NORTHMORE PUGIN. THE REVERSE HAS THE MENTIONED’MINTON & Co PATENT STOKE ON TRENT’ MARK AND’17’ – SEE PHOTOGRAPHS AND DETAILS. IT MEASURES 6 (15.25cm) Sq. APPROX; AND IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION FOR A TILE OF ITS TYPE AND AGE, ALTHOUGH THERE IS A GLAZE DEEP SLIVER CHIP TO ITS BASE EDGE APART FROM THIS IT LOOKS TO BE IN EXCELLENT SHAPE – AGAIN SEE PHOTOGRAPHS AND DETAILS. There are around 50-100 high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. I have a Howard and Son’s sofa listed under my other items that has just been restored to the same standard. This chair has been on a journey, as you can see from the pre-restoration pictures it came to me with a rather bulky modern upholstery on it, I carefully and painstakingly removed the modern fabric to find a stunning rare walnut framed early Victorian Howard & Sons armchair complete with some original distressed upholstery, they had even taken the time to cut out the little H & S initials from the fabric. The back leg is stamped with the serial number, the castors are Cope & Collingson which is the only company Howard & Sons would use as they could make them to Howard’s specification. The chair has been fully restored as you can see, its been reupholstered by a third generation Victorian upholsterer and then hand dyed this lovely tobacco brown colour by my leather polishers, simply put this chair is the finest example you will find anywhere today. Howard & Sons are simply put the finest chair makers in history, the Queen even has a private collection. Width:- 74.5cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. A History of Howard and Sons. The name of Howard and Sons is probably one of the best known and highly sought after names in Upholstered furniture. Over the next few paragraphs I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator under the name John Howard and Sons. The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St. By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the the well established decorators Lenygon and Morant appear to take over the name with the business address being given as 31 Old Burlington St (Lenygon and Morants premesis since 1909). Lenygon and Morant later moved to South Audley St where from 1954 they advertised as’Makers of Howard Chairs and Sofas’. In 1967 the owners of Lenygon and Morant open Howard Chairs Limited, the company operating from Lyme St continue to make high quality sofas and armchairs. Exhibitions and Important Houses. At the 1862 International Exhibition (The 3rd World Expo) Howard and Sons entered a suite of library furniture for which they won a prize. They also went on to exhibit at the Paris World’s Fair, called an Exposition Universelle twice; once in 1878 and again in 1900. Also at the Exposition Internationale d’Anvers 1894 (International Exposition/World Fair Antwerp). Winning Prizes at them all including 1 silver and 2 golds. They also employed their eclectic styles working for many important clients providing furniture for important houses such as Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire, Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire and Stokesay Court, Shropshire. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE, we can have it delivered nationwide to include Scotland Wales and Ireland. Wimbledon-Furniture is a privately owned family ran business out of Wimbledon SW19, we have four large storage warehouses, if you have any questions my number is under the business sellers information, please feel free to call or text. Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition. Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade. RARE Antique Late 18c Early 19c Tibet Men's Earring Turquoise Silver & Gold Gilt
Antique Late 18th Early 19th Century Men’s Tibetan Earring, Silver And Gold Gilt With Large Turquoise Pieces And Complex Beaded Patterns. While there are many reproductions of Tibetan and Nepalese antiques as well as modern primitive souvenirs that are presented as original pieces, we have confirmed this to be a rare and original late 18th to early 19th century antique man’s earring. The stones are high grade, and its age shows, but it is not damaged. There is soiling in the corners and crannies of the earring from age and we did not attempt to remove them. There are no cracks or chips in the stones, the piece is strong and sturdy, it is not fragile. The detailed bead-work still shows well despite age. We have found only one comparable piece of this age, which was described as being silver with gold gilt. We have not tested this piece and therefore cannot confirm that it is in fact low grade silver or if it is silver gilt with a gold gilt decoration. This does not however diminish its rarity and does not alter its authenticity. The main decoration is 1 1/8″ long and 5/8″ wide and 3/8 thick. The earring is approximately 1 5/8 in diameter. The hoop is 1/8 thick. Each high grade Tibetan turquoise stone is approximately 1/4 or bigger. Please study photos for further detail and condition. We welcome any questions you may have about this item. Please send a message including your postal code if you would like to get specific costs for your area. We welcome any questions or information that you may want to give us on this item. We make every effort to answer your questions promptly.
