RARE LATE 19TH to EARLY 20TH CENTURY EDWARDIAN ANTIQUE E N G L I S H TROPICAL BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD WALKING STICK/CANE, with HIGHLY DECORATIVE, ORNATE, BAS-RELIEF, FLORAL MOTIF STAMPED STERLING SILVER HANDLE CAP & INCISED STERLING SILVER, ORIGINAL FERRULE & HEEL. Late 19th to early 20th century E n g l i s h antique highly decorative & ornate gentlemen’s walking sticks & cans. 37 14″ Height x 1 12″ Width (top). Weight: 13.7 oz. For once stepping out in London in high style! This late 19th-early 20th century Edwardian antique tropical Brazilian rosewood shaft and highly decorative, pressed, stamped, bas-relief, floral motif sterling silver handle cap, has its original incised line, sterling silver ferrule and heel. This was clearly not made for folks from the’other side of the tracks’ but rather for the much smaller in number and well-heeled, wealthy elite, representing the social antagonists in Dickensian and then Edwardian London. Putting discussions of class and socio-economic class antagonisms aside, this was a rosewood and sterling silver walking stick that was meant to be at once ostentatious and an obvious social signal to those watching, of elevated social and economic class position. The Brazilian tropical rosewood, hardwood shaft is without breaks, deep abrasions, flea-bites, noticeable dings or dents. The decorative, ornate sterling silver handle cap has some minor, old dents and dings but is still very beautiful and intact, not suffering from tears, creases, repairs (old or new) or depreciating deformities. Incredibly decorative, ornate and entirely patrician. You get the picture. Good to Very Good overall antique condition. A unusually large primitive early 19th century Irish stick back’hedge’ chair, also known as a famine chair. The chair originates from the rural areas where a large part of the population in the 18th and 19th century lived in single-roomed dwellings, demonstrating the widespread rural poverty of the time. Featuring a thick single slab sycamore seat, turned beech front legs and ash arms, sticks and sycamore comb. The chair of wonderful colour and character, is in robust condition for age, with one fascinating period repair of a rear leg having been replaced in chiseled stick form rather than the other three beech turned originals. There are signs of some historic worm activity but the chair is structurally sound. Of particularly unusual, large size. Seat Thickness: 4.3cms. One of the best examples of its kind on the market at present. The item “Rare & Large Early 19th Century Stick Back, Hedge Chair Antique Folk Art” is in sale since Sunday, November 22, 2020.
