A rare and unique early 18th century longcase clock by John Bates of Kettering.. The clock is around 6 feet tall and the depth (sides) is only 4 and a half inches… The door width is 7 and a half inches, and the dial is 7 and a half inches square. The clock is very primitively made, and has an early verge type alarm with inside striking of the bell… The hood has very unusual wire hinges. This clock must be the earliest Bates of Kettering clock in existence. Moon, Tides, Date, Month of Year. A fascinating longcase clock with a very rare and unusual dial. The dial is marked for Placidus Penyston. The style of dial and movement have features which place them in the very early era of longcase clock making, possibly around 1700. The dial has particularly rare features, especially so considering its age. The subsidiary seconds and date are fairly standard for clocks of this type although the date inset is unusually placed. In addition, there is a penny moon cut-out with extra smaller windows for moon-phase and time of high water. Finally, and virtually never seen, is a rectangular inset revealing the current month of the year. The 8 day striking movement looks typical of those found around 1700. It is quite tall with five knopped and finned pillars. It has an inside countwheel, and the anchor location is lower than in later movements. The clock also comes with an ancient looking pair of brass-cased lead weights. I cant say for certain that these are original but certainly could be given the age of the clock. Overall condition is very good. The dial is clean and bright with good silvering to the rings. The movement is clean and runs well. All extra dial functions are connected and working apart from the year dial. I can see no sign that this was ever connected so probably for manual adjustment. The case is sound and solid with some age-related marks and movement. Dimensions are: height 74 inches, width 20 inches (top of hood), depth 11 inches (again top of hood). The dial is 11 inches square. The clock is complete with brass-cased lead weights, brass faced pendulum and winder. Viewing and collection welcome. The item “Early Longcase Clock. SPECTACULAR RARE EARLY 18TH CENTURY DUTCH MARQUETRY. MOON PHASE 2 BELLS 8 DAY WITH ALARM. The hood with caddy top and gilt flaming finial over the break-arch dial, the trunk with floral and foliate fruitwood marquetry and scrolling door with shaped lenticle with gilt bronze ormolu Rococo style mount depicting Chronos amongst C scrolls, raised on a bombe base with claw and ball feet, the brass break-arch dial with moonphase to the top and gilt Rococo style spandrels, the silvered Roman chapter ring with Arabic five minute markers, the gilt matted centred with subsidiary seconds dial and silvered name plate, with a central subsidiary alarm dial. The weight driven movement striking on two bells, with pendulum and two weights and crank winding key… The 13 inch brass dial having a painted moon roller in the arch above a silvered chapter ring engraved with foliate scrolls between the numerals. The matted centre incorporating a subsidiary seconds dial, calendar aperture and alarum, with a plaque inscribed W. Gib Rotterdam, ornamented with gilt spandrels to the corners. The caddy topped hood with shaped cavetto moulding centred by a carved parcel gilt ormolu crest and urn finial, and marquetried with trailing flowers; the dial flanked by gilded integral columns. The trunk having a shaped door with applied edge moulding, a carved scroll crest to the top and a glazed panel framed in a Rococo scrolling ormolu cartouche with decorative figural mount, inlaid with flowers, a bird and a butterfly and flanked by chequer banded canted sides. The marquetried bombe base raised on lion paw feet. 98 ins (250 cms) overall in height. THIS FINE CLOCK IS IN SPECTACULARLY GOOD CONDITION THROUGHOUT. William Gib Senior clockmaker/watchmaker. 2 Blaak, Rotterdam, Holland. William Gib was born in 1673 or 1674, either in Scotland or in England. He was a renowned maker of many good quality longcase clocks, wall clocks, bracket clocks and pocket watches. Around 1700 he was married to Anna Rommilius (also Romelius) in Rotterdam; the couple had 10 children. Between 1709 and 1735 Gib several times held the position of chairman of the St. From 1716 to his death Gib worked at Vissersdijk, Noordblaak in Rotterdam, where he had bought a house. His sons Willem and Pieter also became watch- and clockmakers in Rotterdam. S house was demolished in 1880, with only three memorial stones remaining in the gable of the museum. LOVELY OLD ANTIQUE GEORGIAN BRASS DIAL LONGCASE CLOCK. JO Band of Bridgwater – 1760-79 (James Osmond Band). Early engraved brass dial 30 hour longcase clock. In a plain pine country case, lovely golden colour and patina – 81 high. Superb 11.5 square dial with fine spandrels, finely cut original hands, and large date wheel. All in exceptional condition and in good working order keeping excellent time. Chain driven movement striking the hours on a large bell. Ornate ringed pendulum bob. A very rare maker, I have never come across another Band clock. He was in partnership with a James Hine as braziers and ironmongers, in Bridgwater the business dissolving in 1772 when Hine moved to Exeter, and Band continued the business in Bridgwater. At the time Bridgwater was a major centre for brass, bronze and other metal foundries. However Band and Hine continued to advertise a wide range of goods after that date at their warehouse in North St Exeter, including church and other clocks. Excellent clock ready to put in your home.
