Interesting plane probably from mid 1800s. Early infill plane of the type made by Slater, Spiers and Norris. It has a heavy cast bronze body with hardwood infill, but the way of securing the blade looks back to older wooden planes. There is a substantial wooden wedge, no adjustment mechanism, and no metal bridge to support the blade. Instead it is held by lugs cast in the sides of the body. The plane is in good condition generally with dust and marks of age and use. There is a crack in the wood infill at the back which probably goes right through along the grain, please see the last 4 photos. Most of what is known of the ancient world comes from the accounts of antiquity’s own historians. Although it is important to take into account the bias of each ancient author, their accounts are the basis for our understanding of the ancient past. Some of the more notable ancient writers include Herodotus. A fundamental difficulty of studying ancient history is that recorded histories. Cannot document the entirety of human events, and only a fraction of those documents have survived into the present day. Furthermore, the reliability of the information obtained from these surviving records must be considered. Few people were capable of writing histories, as literacy was not widespread in almost any culture until long after the end of ancient history. The earliest known systematic historical thought emerged in ancient Greece. Beginning with Herodotus of Halicarnassus. Largely eliminated divine causality in his account of the war between Athens and Sparta. Establishing a rationalistic element which set a precedent for subsequent Western historical writings. He was also the first to distinguish between cause and immediate origins of an event. Was an ancient culture with a relatively high literacy rate. But many works by its most widely read historians are lost. A Roman historian who lived in the 1st century BC, wrote a history of Rome called Ab Urbe Condita. (From the Founding of the City) in 144 volumes; only 35 volumes still exist, although short summaries of most of the rest do exist. Early 14th to Late 15th Century. I found this with a metal detector around 30 years ago, and had it dated at my local museum where I was working at the time, it was also sent off to be treated for bronze disease. Unfortunately due to a house move, the documentation for the age evaluation and treatment was. Lost in the move, however you can find examples of this if you search online. This is an extremely rare find, as they are normally found in a broken state. I had it on long term loan to the local museum where I worked at the time, but took it back when the museum closed down for refurbishments as I was afraid of it getting mislaid. Sadly the museum in question never re-opened due to over budget spending issues, consequently. I have had it. Kept in an acid free box. Wrapped in acid free tissue paper. In a drawer ever since. I feel it should be appreciated by someone who would take great care of it, and hopefully have it on display. This would be ideal for the serious collector of Medieval antiquities. HEADS UP: I have lowered the price of this several times now. The item “Medieval Bronze Spur. Early 14th to Late 15th Century. Extrememly rare” is in sale since Thursday, September 5, 2019.
