Posted by admin On November 21, 2024
SCROLL DOWN TO SEE ALL THE PHOTOS ANTIQUE AFRICAN TRIBAL TALKING DRUM. Mid 19th Century 17 1/4 inches (435mm) long, by 7 1/2 inches (195mm) This is an antique drum, over 100 years old and, whilst the drum skins themselves are still in good condition, some straps are dried out or broken with age, others replaced with string. Consequently the skins are quite slack The tension and tone can still be varied by squeezing gently, but rough usage would almost certainly break more of the straps Apart from the fragility of the straps, this beautiful antique African drum is in good original condition. It would make a wonderful display piece and be a fine addition to any collection. See the photographs for condition & type. ANTIQUE AFRICAN TRIBAL TALKING DRUM 1850 figure carving club. EARLY AFRICAN TRIBAL TALKING DRUM 19TH C ETHNIC V OLD VINTAGE ANTIQUE RARE DRUM. This is a beautiful. In my estimation it dates from the mid 19th Century, but please make up your own mind about this. The drum measures approx 17 1/4 inches (435mm) long, by 7 1/2 inches (195mm) in diameter. It has a skin at either end, tensioned by numerous thin leather straps. As the drum was played the straps would be tightened and released by the drummer’s arm, in order to vary the tension on the drum skins, and thus vary the pitch of the drum as it was played. Hence the name talking drum. This is an antique drum, over 100 years old and, whilst the drum skins themselves are still in good condition, some of the leather tensioning straps have become dried out or broken with age, some have been replaced with string. Consequently the skins are quite slack. The tension and tone can still be varied by squeezing gently, but rough usage would almost certainly break more of the straps. Apart from the fragility of the straps, this beautiful antique African drum is in good original condition. Please see the photographs for condition & type. Weight approx 580 grams. Rare Antique African Yaka Mbwoolo Fetish Figure Congo Early to Mid 20th Century
Posted by admin On April 26, 2023
Rare Antique African Yaka Mbwoolo Fetish Figure Congo Early to Mid 20th Century. This is an extremely rare African Yaka Mbwoolo Fetish Figure on wood stand that is painted black. It is possible that it is 19th century, but I cannot be sure. What makes this figure so rare is that the fiber and resin and colored earth are in very good condition. Most of the fetish figures that you find do not have the pouch(bonga-magic) with the power ingredients intact. These figures were used among the Yaka tribe of Zaire to support or contain special concoctions or powers. When charged with these ingredients, they become medicines-poisons that “make ill” through an invisible (supernatural) influence – or “make well” by removing this influence. Owned by specific lineages rather than individuals. The man or woman who becomes cured is entitled to become its ritual officer or nganga (‘doctor’). Mbwoolo figures are passed on from generation to generation. Provenance: Collection of Dr. Dennis Bettancourt, Los Angeles, CA. I will sell this item with these documents. Measurements with stand: 11 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 4 inches. Weight: 1 lb 6oz. Condition: Very good condition. Very rare to find a fetish figure with the fabric, fiber and paint resin practically intact. A genuine early example of traditional African craftsmanship, caved from a single lump of African harwood, the stool is raised on seven tapering legs. The top is beautifully docorated with traditional Nupe geometric carvings & has the most beautiful depth of colour with a wonderful patina. W: 45.5cm (17.9). D: 46.5cm (18.3).
