Really unusual pair of 20th century Japanese (possibly Satsuma ware) vases decorated in almost European style reminiscent of rustic majolica. Each stamped’Made in Japan’ to the base. THE MATERIAL IS WHITE CLAY FOUND IN SHIMAZU REGION OF JAPAN. MINUTE CRACKLE LINES ARE ALL OVER THE VASE. THE VASE IS OF THE SATSUMA TYPE PAINTED DELICATELY AND BEAUTIFULLY WITH A LANDSCAPE. IN THE LANDSCAPE ARE FOUND A TREE, VARIOUS PLANTS AND FLOWERS, PHOENIXES AND OTHER BIRDS IN FLIGHT. ALL THESE ARE PAINTED DELICATELY ON THE VASE IN RED, LIGHT BLUE, GREEN, YELLOW, GOLD, PINK AND BLACK. REALLY” BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER” FOR THIS ONE OF A KIND VASE. UNDERNEATH ARE THE SHIMASU CREST AND THE SATSUMA MARK PAINTED IN GOLD OVER RED. PRE 1870 SATSUMA WARES HAD NO ARTIST MARKS. HEIGHT 7.2 INCHES. MOUTH RIM 2.2 INCHES. BASE RIM 2.7 INCHES.
Rare Early Japanese Satsuma Blue Morriage Crane Jar Vase. Very fine piece of antique Satsuma in very rare form. Beautiful blue color morriage body with a crane on either side. White feathers of cranes are done in morriage while the rest is hand painted. Body of piece is in amazing condition. Small chips to underside of foot rim. Unfortunately jar is missing lid. Previous owner attempted to paint unglazed lip rim. Paint can most likely be easily removed with solvent. Most likely mid-19th Century, end of Edo period or early Meiji.
