Mid 19th Century 17 1/4 inches (435mm) long, by 7 1/2 inches (195mm) This is an antique drum, over 100 years old and, whilst the drum skins themselves are still in good condition, some straps are dried out or broken with age, others replaced with string. Consequently the skins are quite slack The tension and tone can still be varied by squeezing gently, but rough usage would almost certainly break more of the straps Apart from the fragility of the straps, this beautiful antique African drum is in good original condition. It would make a wonderful display piece and be a fine addition to any collection. See the photographs for condition & type. ANTIQUE AFRICAN TRIBAL TALKING DRUM 1850 figure carving club. EARLY AFRICAN TRIBAL TALKING DRUM 19TH C ETHNIC V OLD VINTAGE ANTIQUE RARE DRUM. This is a beautiful. In my estimation it dates from the mid 19th Century, but please make up your own mind about this. The drum measures approx 17 1/4 inches (435mm) long, by 7 1/2 inches (195mm) in diameter. It has a skin at either end, tensioned by numerous thin leather straps. As the drum was played the straps would be tightened and released by the drummer’s arm, in order to vary the tension on the drum skins, and thus vary the pitch of the drum as it was played. Hence the name talking drum. This is an antique drum, over 100 years old and, whilst the drum skins themselves are still in good condition, some of the leather tensioning straps have become dried out or broken with age, some have been replaced with string. Decorated with a dog mounted by an orange circel, a so called”Circle Tile. Circa 1600 – Very thick tile – Very good condition, only some glaze pitting. (please see pictures) no restorations. The mascot is nicely detailed and is made in two parts from solid brass and other than the iron nut is stuck on the thread it is in very good uncleaned condition with no damage. This listing is for a very rare French mantel clock. This clock dates to the early 1800s and features a gorgeous gilt bronze design. The clock is rare because it has automata/automaton features with a moving water fountain. The fountain has its own movement and has a glass rod that spins, giving the illusion of water being spouted. The clock has a gothic design with a cathedral shaped center. The cathedral has gilt bronze knights in armor, brickwork, and spires. The front has has a statue of a young man playing with a monkey. There is a chain that extends between the two. The basin of the fountain is in the shape of a clam shell. The inner part of the clam shell appears to be sterling silver. The clock movement is an early silk thread movement. It has a design allowing the pendulum to swing outside the case. This design was probably created so that the pendulum doesn’t hit the lower automaton movement. The clock measures 8.4 x 4.75 x 14.75 inches. The movements were last serviced in 2018. The lower automaton movement did run when tested (see video). The clock movement might need servicing.
