Rare early Indian filigree silver Padan box Deccan c 1840

A fabulous and rare Indian filigree silver Padan or betel nut box. The filigree coils of are of outstanding weight and quality, the lid has a raised central section with a crenulated rim. The base is silver sheet. The box was almost certainly made by the Muslim Nizam craftsmen of Karimnagar near Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh c1800. The manufacturing process was demanding and complex, for a full description see’Indian Silver’ by S. Pathak, pages 24 to 26. The padan box is in good collector’s condition, the gaps in the open work appear to be original. Some play to the hinge. Karimnagar Deccan c 1840. 60 x 45 x 34mm.
