RARE EARLY 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE, SMALL, DIMINUTIVE 10 in HEIGHT, BURNT UMBER, BURNT SIENNA & SEPIA BROWN DIPPED over YELLOW OCHRE, HAND DECORATED, GLAZED OVOID STONEWARE CERAMIC HANDLED JUG. [Complex, variegated glaze color is achieved by dipping the yellow ochre glazed stoneware jug repeatedly in burnt umber, burnt sienna & sepia brown glaze, achieving the semi-transparent, layered colors we now see]. Early 19th century Ame ri can folk art, New England primitive ovoid shaped, hand decorated, handled stoneware ceramic jugs. 10″ Height x 6 1/2 ” Width x 4 ” base Width x 1″ Inner rim. X 1 5/8 Outer rim. Offered for your review and consideration is this subtle but still nonetheless very beautiful, hand decorated, early 19th century Ame ri can folk art, New England primitive, antique small, 10 in height, hand decorated ovoid stoneware handled ceramic jug. It features simply fantastic variegated brown, semi-transparent glaze in burnt umber, burnt sienna and sepia brown, hand dipped over an initial yellow ochre or putty white base glaze. The result is an incredible, layered symphony of overlapping color, resembling a work of fine art with layered color crepe paper. There’s only one slight, minor ceramic chip on the outside margin of the baseplate, where the sidewall meets the bottom. No attempt has been made to repair, conceal or otherwise minimize this honest and sole damage to the entire jug. The unglazed baseplate of the ovoid jug demonstrates its age and early, nearly 180 to 200 year old antique pedigree. A veritable, well-preserved gem from our collective New England primitive past.
