BREATH TAKING EXTREMELY RARE EARLY VICTORIAN M J Rückert SOLID SILVER & GLASS INKWELL. This is a Fabulous Extremely Rare Early Victorian Solid Silver & Glass Inkwell -Inkstand with a Carved Cherub Seated , this Rare Inkstand has been crafted by the highly sought after German Silversmith Martin Joseph Rückert , it would have been crafted in Mainz Germany and date’s to circa 1840 making it at nearly 180 years old, the detailing is breath taking, you will not find another Inkstand on the Market like this and of such rare design and quality, as you can see the glass inkwell itself has the most beautiful wheel engraved glass body creating the most wonderful scrolls and foliage, it has a solid silver hinged lid which has a stunning cast decorated lid with a delicate finial to the top, even the collar to the neck has a beautiful design, this sits snugly within its raised solid silver gadroon decorated pedestal foot which is attacted to the solid silver base, next to the inkwell you will now see the most unusual fabulous solid silver curved bench with a stunning turned silver balustrade to each end and also one in the centre of the back rest, this has beautiful open pierced decoration of scrolls and foliage to the back rest of this amazing bench, sitting upon the solid silver bench is the most breath taking carved cherub figure, sitting with his leg crossed while leaning against the back of the bench resting on his elbow as he is engrossed in reading his book, the detailing to the beautiful carved winged cherub is stunning from his wonderful face to his curly mop of hair, his face is stunning as he consentrates on the reading of his book, this fabulous carved cherub has been crafted especially for this inkstand and he sits securely and is attached to the bench with a silver thread screw, all this sits upon a kidney shape solid silver base which has wonderful scroll work to the centre and it is finished with an embossed egg and dart border which is so typical of the early victorian period. The quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this i believe would have once belonged to a wealthy Gentleman or lady and been used daily to write there letters, they would have written letters using a quill pen , dipping it into this rare inkwell, this was in a time when letter writing was very important and sent daily, if this rare inkwell could talk i bet it would have some fascinating stories to tell, this is so very tactile and once held it has the most wonderful feel. This will add something very special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice. Please study the photos as this is an extremely rare Inkstand, it is hallmarked to the base, its in beautiful condition, it may have once had tiny screw in feet but that being said it doesnt detract at all from its rare beauty, just mentioned for accuracy, its so extremely rare you will not see or find another like this on the market. Antique Ceylonese silver and copper betel nut lime box or KILLOTAYA. Of flattened round form with attached chain this was made to carry lime or chunam for mixing with sliced Areca nut for betel chewing. Hinged like a pocket watch. Superb quality and detail with silver hinges, surrounds and chain with silver inlaid copper to front and back. Dating from late 18th century and missing its little silver spike or spoon on end of chain. (See similar example The Clive Collection at Powis Castle). Most killotayas were made of brass or copper. This example with fine silver mounts was probably a special commission from a wealthy Kandy dignitary. Size – 4 cms. Weight – 22 gms.
