A rare early 19th century, French Antique snuff or tobacco box. Made in France from papier mache with the top finely decorated with the scene of the judgement of Solomon on the top of the lid after an engraving by Charlin. When opened up the underside of the lid reveals an erotic scene between a nun and a monk with a further nun spectating. The colours are sepia and the main base is black lacquered. The bottom of the box is lined with a cut out caricature of Georgian style, not original to the box but a nice feature added to further enhance the special nature of this scarce box. It is circular in shape. What makes this snuff box stand out from other Erotica snuff boxes of the period is its choice of subjects and the if respective professions, making this box even more attractive and’taboo. This incredible piece is in good condition with a few tiny nibbles to the side and base. Approx measurements: 3.5″ diameter 1″ height.
