Early 19th Century Antique Brass Bell Weight 4LB – Very rare. Probably dates from around 1820. In beautiful used condition. Stamp mark on the top is for. Parnall & Sons of Narrow Wine St, Bristol. The Parnall Family branched out from St Austell in Cornwall to all parts of Cornwall, particularly St Gennys on the north coast, while William Parnall (the founder of Parnall and Sons Ltd) journeyed to Bristol to start a weights and measures business. Around 1820, that business started to expand, as it became more successful, extending the range of services to include cabinet making and shop fitting. Carpentry was at its heart. By 1880, Parnall & Sons Limited. Was one of the largest shop fitting companies in England with over 10,000 people employed all across the country. They had multiple premises in and around Bristol including Fishponds, Narrow Wine Street and Fairfax Street as well as branches in London and Swansea. William Parnall’s son, John Parnall, who is great grandfather to Mark Parnall, Founder of Parnall Group Ltd, expanded the business further and merged it with WT Avery. Another well-known weights and measures brand. The company later demerged but by 1913 the world had turned its attention to War and the pressure on the businesses to contribute to the war effort evolved. Wonderfully tactile object with a weight of history behind it.

Rare Antique Early 19th Century Child’s Miniature Treen Knitting Sheath, Initialled’M. These sewing tools were found mainly in rural areas in Wales, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Scotland and Northumberland, the majority were made in wood; but other materials included leather, metal, bone, straw and quills. They were used by placing the end of the stick against the right hand hip, tucked into the waistband, or belt, at an angle, so a double ended knitting needle could be placed in the hole, at the opposite end, which was about 1 deep. This secured the knitting needle, and freed the right hand so the knitter could knit at speed, also whilst standing or walking. This charming example is rare in its miniature child size and is engraved with the child’s initials. Condition is good, commensurate with and use. Lovely patina to the wood!

Huge Rare Early 19th Century Sicilian Marionette Puppet Opera Dei Pupi 47 Tall
Posted by admin On June 27, 2023
Stunning and very rare Sicilian Marionette dating to the early 19th century. This particular example is the largest I’ve ever owned, standing at 47 inches tall (119cm) & weighing the same as a small child. Very solid in structure throughout, made from a timber skeleton, which is connected with metal rods and finished with stuffing, such as horse hair, and finally covered in material. There would of been more clothing, and potentially a suit of armour. The hands, feet and head are all beautifully hand carved, the eyes on this particular example also move up and down. Wear commensurate with age, crack on the head as picture shows, which is still solid and intact. They became popular in Sicily late in the Middle Ages, during the fifteenth century, and marionettes are still considered an important part of Sicilian folk culture. Sicilian puppet theatre (opera dei pupi) or, more properly, “marionette theatre, ” developed into its present form in the eighteenth century. Strictly speaking, “puppets” fit over the hand, while marionettes are figures controlled by strings, but in common parlance the terms are often used interchangeably; what we’re describing are actually marionettes. Typically, the marionettes and their theatre depict medieval characters and legendary events based loosely on history. 47 / 119cm Tall. 15 / 38cm wide at shoulders.
