RARE Early Victorian Bronze Gothic Arabic Numerals Windmill Time Flies Sundial
EXTREMELY RARE Original Victorian or Earlier Bronze-Brass Gothic Calligraphy Arabic Numerals Windmill “Time Flies” Sundial! Extremely rare to find these original Sundials with Arabic numerals specially with such beautiful Gothic calligraphy! Approximately 20.6 cm (8 1/16 inches) x 20.4 cm (8 inches), and the gnomon (shadow cast pointer) is elevated approximately 8.2 cm (3 4/16 inches) from the flat surface. The Sundial has some wear as anything that goes back 200 or so years as can be seen in the provided images. How-ever still in beautiful shape considering that most of these Sundials due to being out-doors and thus exposed to the elements have weathered away. Beautiful motives with a windmill at the center was it made for a windmill? Very possibly, and the windmill is surrounded with many little rising or setting Suns as well as what appears as tiny little birds, with the hand engraved motto Tyme Flies in gothic calligraphy! All the beautiful details from the Arabic numerals to the lining as well as the motives and motto were hand engraved! This piece was 100 percent hand crafted! Traditionally these beautiful Sundials served as center pieces for English gardens, a way for people to entertain the telling of time! And time definitely flies amongst good friends. Ideal for the perfect English garden specially for a lovely Victorian home! Please feel free to check out my other Beautiful & Historic Sundials! Each Urn is 11 tall and have the Lefebvre mark underneath with a V mark. The pieces are in good condition with some wear to the paint. One of the Gilded Ladies has a repaired head and a hairline crack just below the shoulders (see photo). I believe the urns would have had lids originally which I do not have. This is an amazing and rare set of urns by this important maker that will be a welcome addition to any collection. Rare Very Large Early 19th C Chinese Shiwan Glazed Mudman Woman Figure
Very rare and large Chinese 19th C. Shiwan-glazed mudman woman lady figure, a massive 65 cm or 25 inches in height, wearing a turquoise-glazed robe with streaks of emerald green, blood red and purple over a cream-tone white dress, with a long shawl of the same creamy colour wrapping the shoulders, with the extremities reaching the yellow ochre base or plinth. Her face unglazed and of a dark-sepia tone (please note the same treatment of the right-hand thumb emerging from the sleeve) crowned by an elaborate headdress of ochre-dark brown colour terminating in a cross-shaped bun on the back of the head. PLEASE NOTE: real colours are more brilliant and intense than in the photographs. The statue appears to be in overall very good condition, and all I can see is a small chip on both the extremities of the shawl (where they touch the plinth), a minor chip on one of the holes around the base (the fissure under it seems to be just a kiln flaw), a possible repair on one of those ends, and possibly some minor restorations around the headdress like the tip of the crown (please see the pictures). Note the pierced earlobes and the holes around the head (behind the crown) for possible attachments. It comes with its original certificate, issued by King Arts Company of Hong Kong in April 1962 and signed by the Company’s manager, Mr King. It is the original document and not a copy, and it bears the stamped and numbered photo of the object. Provenance: found in an Italian private collection, it was acquired with other important Chinese artefacts in Hong Kong in 1962, by the uncle of the previous owner. It is absolutely fresh to the market. I will be more accurate once the destination is known, so please wait for the correct invoice before paying. Otherwise it will be at your own risk. RARE EARLY Antique 1559 LAZARUS GERMAN STEIN SCHNELLE TANKARD Siegburg F. Trac
Presented for your consideration is this early antique German beer tankard (also referred to as a stein or schnelle). Dating to 1559, the tankard is made of white stoneware and originates from the Siegburg region of Germany. These tall, cylindrical tankards were first produced in Cologne before being adopted by Siegburg potters. The tall, vertical shape offered lots of surface area for low-relief decoration. Scenes depicted on these 16th century steins were a range of mythological, biblical and heraldic subjects. The three panels on this stein have a matching scene that depicts the expulsion of Lazarus from Rich Man’s Table which comes from the biblical tale/parable of the Rich Man & Lazarus. Pictured is Lazarus, a beggar, desiring to be fed the scraps and crumbs from the Rich Man’s table while dogs lick Lazarus’ sores. A man is chasing Lazarus from the table, expelling him from the premises. The scene below the “Expulsion” scene shows a dog licking a deer while two men stand over the deer. One of the men is holding an ax. On the line separating the scenes it is marked with Lazarus. ” At the bottom of each scene panel is a ribbon that reads “1559 and just above the ribbon are the initials F. These initials stand for F. Trac (Track) who was employed at the first Knutgen workshop. His most famous tankard is “Lazurus” and one of these tankards sits in the Munich Museum in Germany. This museum quality stein has exquisite detailing throughout the exterior and handle with minimal wear. Tankards similar to this one can currently be seen in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Met. This stein is a very rare find as the art of these tankards was lost in Siegburg in 1632 when the town was destroyed by the Swedes, making this a very valuable tankard. This would make a great addition to any ancient item, religious or antique stein collection! Perfect for displaying in a German heritage museum! Light roughness and chipping is along the edges of the handle. A small surface chip is on the edge of one of the panels and another small surface chip is near the top edge on one side. Overall in EXCELLENT condition for its age! Please refer to the photos for the absolute best details. Measures approximately 5″ from the back edge of the handle to the front of the stein, 3 7/8″ in diameter at the bottom and 11 1/2 tall. Please take a look at our photos and feel free to message us with any questions. These charges are the buyers responsibility.
