Antique Very Rare Set of Rowland Ward The Jungle Taxidermist Tools early 20th
Antique Vintage Oddity Tools. Taxidermy: A very rare set of Rowland Ward taxidermist tools early 20th century in leather case with Rowland Ward’The Jungle’ 166 Piccadilly, London 19cm. He built up a hugely successful business that operated from Piccadilly, the most fashionable quarter of nineteenth century London. This business was so strongly based that it continued to operate long after Rowland’s death; in fact it survived in London until the early 1970s. In his lifetime he made many influential innovations in the craft of taxidermy, but in these he was simply carrying on, and improving on, a family tradition. On his return home, Henry Ward took over a taxidermy firm that operated in the West End of London, and became a significant tradesman in his own right. Henry’s oldest son Edwin, and then Rowland, were introduced into the business at an early age and Edwin soon became an important figure on the London zoological scene. Long before his father’s death he opened his own studio in Wigmore Street where he produced work of high quality. However, comparatively little is known of him, and he retired in 1879 for unknown reasons and soon after emigrated to the US. This left Rowland as the sole representative of the Ward family and he raised the family profile to heights that even his brother and father had not been able to reach. In addition to his attainments in taxidermy, Rowland became an important publisher and was responsible for the production of many books on natural history and travel subjects. In this endeavour he was building on a tradition begun by his brother who had produced a book called A Knapsack Manual for Sportsmen in the Field (1872) that Rowland later expanded to become his own big success The Sportsman’s Handbook to Practical Collecting, a publication so influential that it ran to no less than eleven editions. Rare Very Large Early 19th C Chinese Shiwan Glazed Mudman Woman Figure
Very rare and large Chinese 19th C. Shiwan-glazed mudman woman lady figure, a massive 65 cm or 25 inches in height, wearing a turquoise-glazed robe with streaks of emerald green, blood red and purple over a cream-tone white dress, with a long shawl of the same creamy colour wrapping the shoulders, with the extremities reaching the yellow ochre base or plinth. Her face unglazed and of a dark-sepia tone (please note the same treatment of the right-hand thumb emerging from the sleeve) crowned by an elaborate headdress of ochre-dark brown colour terminating in a cross-shaped bun on the back of the head. PLEASE NOTE: real colours are more brilliant and intense than in the photographs. The statue appears to be in overall very good condition, and all I can see is a small chip on both the extremities of the shawl (where they touch the plinth), a minor chip on one of the holes around the base (the fissure under it seems to be just a kiln flaw), a possible repair on one of those ends, and possibly some minor restorations around the headdress like the tip of the crown (please see the pictures). Note the pierced earlobes and the holes around the head (behind the crown) for possible attachments. It comes with its original certificate, issued by King Arts Company of Hong Kong in April 1962 and signed by the Company’s manager, Mr King. It is the original document and not a copy, and it bears the stamped and numbered photo of the object. Provenance: found in an Italian private collection, it was acquired with other important Chinese artefacts in Hong Kong in 1962, by the uncle of the previous owner. It is absolutely fresh to the market. I will be more accurate once the destination is known, so please wait for the correct invoice before paying. Otherwise it will be at your own risk. GREAT ANTIQUE VERY LARGE & EARLY GERMAN PAPIER MACHE DOLL RARE! Exposed Ears
This doll is believed to be an early German Papier Mache shoulder head doll from the mid or early 1800s. The doll is unmarked. She is 31 tall! The doll has a unique expression , black hair, exposed ears, and blue painted eyes. She has kid leather arms that appear to go all the way up to the shoulders. I have not completely undressed her, but the leather is intact at least passed her elbows. She has a cloth body which appears to be original and in good condition but may have been replaced over the years. The clothes are old but again, I cannot determine if they are original. The clothes are in fairly good condition with some tearing of the lace. Her face has multiple rubs and one larger chip on the forehead. There is some loss of coloring on her cheeks but they eyes are still very vibrant. All of these imperfections should be evident in the pictures. All of her fingers are in tact. Overall this very unique doll which would be impressive any collection! Please feel free to ask any questions. The item “GREAT ANTIQUE VERY LARGE & EARLY GERMAN PAPIER MACHE DOLL RARE!
