Visit our shop here. An Antique German Handmade’Greiner’ Marble. Description: This very collectible and interesting early antique marble was handmade between 1850 and 1860. It has a wide opaque white swirl that leads around the marble in a long tail, giving a planetary, swirling effect of molten action. Finished with a beautifully well crafted faceted pontil, in the typical early Greiner style. Type: Greiner marbles are among the earliest type of handmade German glass marbles, from an important and formative period in the technical history of marble making – consequently these marbles are often referred to as as’transitional’ marbles. They were produced during a short period of time in Thuringia, Germany; before the cane and rod types. Greiner marbles (which were previously erroneously often known as Grenier) are highly sought after by collectors and marble historians alike. They were handmade by the Greiner family using a hand-gathered technique of swirling and forming the marble. All Greiner marbles are finished with a finely crafted single ground faceted pontil: they have beautiful, sophisticated colours, and a planetary, spontaneous abstraction of design. 82” or 13/16” inch. A rare early piece by Mashiko after Shoji Hamada. The plate weighs 2.5pounds and measures 11 inches in diameter and 2 inches in height. Along with Soetsu Yanagi, was one of the founding members of Mingei a Japanese folk art movement, which promoted the philosophy of the peoples craft (minsh-teki-na kgei) in postindustrial Japan. In 1924, he settled in Mashiko, a small town in the east of Japan under the Yamizo Mountains, establishing it as a cultural centre for Japanese pottery and Mingei.
