RARE 18th C ANTIQUE ENGLISH FRENCH WROUGHT IRON DOOR GRILLE EARLY BLACKSMITH

RARE 18th C ANTIQUE ENGLISH FRENCH WROUGHT IRON DOOR GRILLE EARLY BLACKSMITH
RARE 18th C ANTIQUE ENGLISH FRENCH WROUGHT IRON DOOR GRILLE EARLY BLACKSMITH. Iron door grilles were made to be placed on the interior of a large and thick door for the purpose of allowing the person inside to examine the person(s) knocking at the door. The grille frame would serve both to slightly obscure the interior users face while they viewed who was trying to enter while also preventing anything from being entered into the household or building (such as a weapon). The space for the door grille had to be large enough to view the persons outside but small enough to prevent someone from trying to stick a hand/arm in the opening as well. The grille was all blacksmith made, hand wrought and features a rarer style that the piece could be opened via the swing gate latch in case the person in the interior chose to talk to the enterer more’face to face’. This swinging of the face of the piece allowed by its placement on two iron pivot areas (see images). Smaller examples of almost identical style in craftsmanship can be seen in the book “Old French Ironwork” a scarce book in itself published decades ago. In the volume you can see a smaller version to which we’ve included a reference that shows very similiar styling to the corner work designs and center patterns. The aforementioned example being quoted as French or English in original origin. If you have traveled to Europe and viewed the wooden doors that adorn churches, public and private houses you’ll have noted the exterior entrance doors of the period are often thick oak or hardwood in nature and adorned with iron nails on the exterior. The stronghold of a home or building was invested in it’s front entrance. This piece being hammered into the interior retains five of its original six long wrought iron’rose head’ nails, each being 3 1/4 in length and a testimate to the thickness of the door it was originally placed into. The patterns to the grille are marvelous! The center being almost as if a gothic stained glass window. Wrought iron work is truly amazing throughout the piece with the blacksmith hammering the individual elements together to create a masterful work or original iron work. The overall frame dimensions of the piece measures 14 3/8″ x 10 3/4; additionally with the nails being taken into account it is 3 1/2″ deep with the addition of the handle swing latch being another 1 1/2. Weight of the piece itself is 7lbs 2oz. The piece exhibits some expected pitting and oxidation from age. Is lacking one of the six original spikes, though five are present (in itself a rare find to have so many). A very very scarce example of antique original blacksmith made decorative ironwork that is truly of Museum Quality. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Tailor your auctions with Auctiva’s. Rare Early English Medieval Anglo-Saxon Iron Double Bladed Axe Head Conserved
Add To Saved Sellers. Rare Early English Medieval Anglo-Saxon Iron Double Bladed Axe Head Conserved. Oxide conserved via removal and oiling. Century AD Holme, Cambridgeshire. Axe blades at 9 cm each: overall length at 22.5 cm: weight at 432 grams. This Anglo-Saxon axe head [and currently listed mace head and spear] were recovered in the area of a known battle, which took place in the winter of AD 903 / 904: Although it cannot be proved to be from this battle – it is highly likely. This is a rare and complete double-bladed axe head, which was found locally along with a period Anglo-Saxon spiked mace head. The axe head has been forged in the whole and detail a square central outer body-collar with a circular hafting hole within at a diametre of 2.8cm. The axe blades each project 9 cm from the central hafting socket: It is very rare to have an item in this complete condition and referenced to a historically known battle site in the early Medieval period. Oxide removal and careful oiling and sealing to a museum display standard. This item was unearthed locally in the winter of 1994 while a series of drainage ditches were being extended by farm workers: and I acquired the item and a similar period Anglo-Saxon mace head from the finder in 2003: When I received the items they were as dug and, as such suffering with oxide degradation: Before adding them to my armoury collection I carefully conserved the item and the results are now appreciated. The Battle of Holme. The village of Holme is thought to be the site of a battle, said to have taken place in the winter of AD 903 904, during a period of civil war between two claimants to the throne of Wessex after Alfred the Great died. His son Edward the elder took the throne of Wessex but Æthelwold, son of Alfreds older brother disputed his claim. In AD 902 Æthelwold came with a fleet to Essex and the following year he persuaded the East Anglian Danes to attack the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and north Wessex: Edward retaliated by ravaging East Anglia and the Danish army was forced to return to defend its own territory. Edward then retreated along the Great North Road, but the men of Kent straggled. Æthelwold and the Danes caught up with them and it is thought chased them down Glatton Lane to the Fen edge at Holme. They were unable to escape and in the ensuing battle Æthelwold and the Kentish leader were killed: Although the Danes won the battle it did end the brutal civil war in the south. This battle is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon chronicles and it reports that thousands of combatants were killed. Beautiful very rare antique wax over slit head twins in fantastic original condition. Dating to approx 1840. Both measure just over 17 heigh, their outfits are identical consisting of 5 layers, long knickers, chemise, woolen underskirt, calico under dress and a delicate shear cotton over dress, one has a pink ribbon sash and hair ribbons the other blue. I do not think the clothing has ever been removed from them and I have not undressed them. Their eyes are both pupil less glass eyes and their hair is all original mohair that has been inserted into the slit on their heads and still retains their lovely ringlets. The doll with pink ribbons has green leather arms and the blue one tan leather arms both with no damage. Their body’s are obviously fabric and there is no leaking sawdust from either of them. They really are super and very rare to find twins, I will list what faults I can find on each doll individually and you are free to ask for more photos. Pink ribbon doll, tiny hole 1/4 cm to one side of dress which is unnoticeable really, maybe some hair missing just below the ribbon at the back of on her hair, ribbons faded but still have colour. Blue ribbon doll – small nick in fabric to back of dress (not really noticeable) blue ribbon split at the back that could easily be sewn. Ribbon frayed at side of waist, one eyebrow missing, easily can be drawn back on. Tiny little dent to 1st layer of wax to her chin again not really noticeable. I have never removed their clothes so cannot garentee what their bodies are like but judging by the rest of both of the dolls the body’s will be perfect and they feel just fine and very robust with no leaking sawdust. If you love very old English teds who are very furry with lots of beautiful features including painted back glass eyes and hump then you’ll love Gracie! Gracie dates to 1910-20s and was made by Omega! She stands around 21inches tall from her ear tip to toe, is fully jointed, and well stuffed with woodwool! Omega bears are quite rare, which is why Gracie is so special as she’s in wonderful condition with hardly any wear except a little light gentle darning above her original nose stitching! She is covered in bountiful soft blonde mohair, has a fantastic hump, original pads in excellent condition (other than one handpaw which displays the pretty underpad material). She has card lined feet, stitched facial features and beautiful original shiny painted back glass eyes. Gracie is dressed in an antique cotton lace dress with ribbon bracelet and feels so wonderful to hold, she’s one of my favourite bears!
