One of the earliest examples with tiny boot button eyes (4mm), jointed head, arms and legs. She has tufty, stone-coloured mohair hair and a non-original vintage dress. 11 or 28cm tall. Margarete Steiff originally made soft toys, usually from felt and later mohair. Her jointed animals became hugely popular and she branched out into doll making, at first with dolls like this with boot button eyes and later with small blue glass eyes (see my other listing). Perfect Christmas Antique Rare Early Steiff Felt German Ulanen Soldier Doll 1910

Extremely rare pre First World War Steiff soldier. Painted hair, eyebrows and mouth. Dark blue felt long jacket with high red collar, epaulettes and 8 original 5mm Steiff buttons (2 missing) on front and 2 on coat tails. Fine leather shoes with felt under soles. Two silk additions in French flag colours on metallic flat cord, both hand sewn and hanging from original metallic braid shoulder straps. Chain around waist with remnants of braid and red felt where a sword hung. Stitching and braid remnants to palm of right hand suggests sword was attached to the hand at some point.
