Rare Antique Children Carousel Elefant, Germany early 20th Century
Rare Antique Children Carousel Elefant, Germany early 20th Century. A wooden carved children’s carousel elephant with polychrome painting, made in Germany around 1910. Unrestored original condition, partially repainted, signs of wear commensurate with age, some missing parts. A great change for your interior decoration. The first carousel horses were created in the 18th century for the entertainment of aristocrats. The enthusiasm spread to broad sections of the population and the Vienna Prater was opened with a carousel in 1766. Germany developed into a center of carousel construction. Famous manufacturers included Friedrich Heyn, Hermann Thümmel, Karl Müller and Fritz Botmann. The artfully carved horses and classic carriages were supplemented with exotic animals such as lions, tigers, giraffes, zebras and elephants. Pioneers of the first generation of showmen in the United States were Gustav A. Loof and Frank Hrubetz, who designed and constructed great rides. The world wars of the 20th century meant the end of carousel art. Many originals were destroyed and replaced by plastic copies. Artfour is an owner-operated trading company dealing in Black Forest woodcarvings, antler furniture and an impressive variety of unique decorative items. Our antiques are displayed in a 100 years old barn in southern Germany, which we have remodeled ourselves. Antique pieces have been our passion since the 1980s. Please note the condition – there is loose stitching around the brim, one of the embellishments is hanging off, and the leather interior is badly cracked. It’s also quite dusty. I’ve pictured all of these things for your consideration, so please see the pics. This is a great piece of history for the collector. I could not find another Tardan hat of this age.

The exceptional quality of the piercing and engraving make this antique incense bowl both rare and exceptional. This handsome Oajar Persian brass incense bowl is likely early 19th century or possibly older. The bowl features delicate piercing work and is crafted by an unidentified master coppersmith. The color of the bowl is lightly polished brass, creating a beautiful patina that heightens the brilliance of this craftsman’s exceptional skill. The reticulated cover and bowl are amazingly intricate. The designs include animals and figures and calligraphy, all entwined by arabesques. From an old Upstate New York collection. 3.6 Diameter (base foot rim). 6.5 Diameter (top of bowl). The foot rim may have been resoldered. There a two imperfection in the piercing, note last two photographs.
