Add To Saved Sellers. Rare Antique Esoteric Early 17th Century Original 1613 Folio Occult / Witchcraft. Excessively Rare Antique Esoteric Early 17th Century – Original 1613 Folio Occult – Witchcraft Theological Latin Gloss 936 Printed Pages – Alphonso Tosati. Alonso Tostado was known by many variations. He was a Spanish theologian, a counsellor of John II of Castile and briefly a bishop of Avila. A leading scholar of his time, he is particularly known as an early theorist on witchcraft, in his works he defends the possibility of flying witches based on biblical exegesis. He was also a significant influence on the Jewish Bible commentator and statesman Isaac Abravanel. This edition was published in Germany Coloniae Agrippinae. Philosophi, Theologi, ac Pontificij Iuris Caesareiq: consultissimi, nec non linguae Graecae etc Hebraicae peritissimi. Nunc primum in Germania post Venetas impressiones diligentissime in lucem edita. Sumptibus Ionnis Gymnici, etc Antonij Hierati. 936 printed pages in two books or sections within. The cover is fully contemporary with boards covered in calf skin: The book benefits from original wood engravings within and the title page is printed in black and red inks: The tone is folio sized and all the pages are edged in red gloss ink: The language is of Latin text and we can see that the title refers to Leviticus and Deuteronomy: The book is related to the Occult and is a theological scholarly gloss with interpretations concerning the occult and the biblical books. Glosses such as these were often written by cloistered monks or scribes as very few people would have been educated enough to attempt such work. The book would have been kept in a noble house, university or monastery, the esoteric and learned wisdom within would have meant that its audience was privileged and limited. It is also possible that this one folio is just one volume of a greater commissioned set: Indeed, there is a III seen worn to the outer spine, which suggests to me, that this folio may be volume III of a larger set now missing or destroyed. Alphonso was also known as Alphonso de Madrigal. He was a fifteenth century Bishop of Avila in Spain, and his biblical commentaries were first published in 1596 as part of his complete works. Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium was the Roman colony in the Rhineland from which the German city of Cologne developed. Agrippina the younger was born in AD 15 in Cologne, wife of Emperor Claudius, she convinced her husband to elevate her birthplace to city status, Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. The name of the city changed through time, by the 4th century AD it was known as Colonia Agrippina, shortened to Colonia sometime after the 5th century. This book was possibly printed in Cologne as there is a prominent reference to Colonia Agrippina on the title page. (39 cm) x 8 ¾ IN (25 cm) x 3 1/4(8 cm) thick: total weight at 3.38 Kilograms. Fine: two signatures seen in ink to the inside front cover. The book is in above average condition for its great age: The spin and binding are sound, and all pages are present: There is some damage to the inside cover page (please see pictures) however, this appears to be rodent / insect related: There are some signs of insect damage to the top and bottom spine however, this is localised and limited. There is foxing seen to some of the pages, which is age associated: some of the pages have small surface burns from fire or candle proximity and these are small and insignificant: Woodcuts remain crisp and are fine for a book over four centuries of age. Further pictures are available upon request however, these will only be provided to serious potential buyers. Rare Tall African Islamic Teaching Board TANZANIA Early to Mid 20th Century
Rare Tall African Islamic Teaching Board – TANZANIA – Early to Mid 20th Century. Another African artifact from my personal collection. Tall and unusual example of a teaching board from Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania. The population in this area is 99% Islamic. I have never seen one with the abstract design of the head at the top and legs depicted at the bottom. Nice patina and wear from use. Probably used by a teacher, due to size. Custom black painted steel stand holds piece firmly upright. Last photo shows a similar, newer example in the British Museum. Not a tourist piece, but a genuine African artifact. 48 Inches tall 6 Inches Wide Custom Stand 7 x 7 Inches. Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-Enquiries-07510 503344. A little bit about us. We are a husband and wife team, and have spent many years developing our knowledge as collectors of fine antiques. Along the way we have restored many period properties, and have enjoyed furnishing them in our favourite ” English Country House Style” and because of our passion for anything old & beautiful, and appreciation of real quality and craftsmanship, which sadly today`s furniture generally does not offer, we decided to turn a much loved hobby / obsession! Into a business and pass our beautiful finds onto other people to enjoy. With our endless “treasure hunts” for the original and authentic, we offer a diverse selection of antique furniture and quality decorative items, ranging from the 17th century to the 20th century in all price ranges, making it possible for everyone to own a little piece of history, and true craftsmanship. We have been collectors for over 30 years and have been successfully trading for 15 of those years. We regularly work with interior designers and fellow dealers. We are happy to source any particular items you may be looking for. Our knowledge and expertise allows us to source many varied and high quality items. Our showrooms are within our beautiful. Grade I listed Medieval Manor House in the pretty village of Mersham in Kent. A fine and rare early 18th century walnut writing cabinet secretaire. Wonderful use of beautifully patinated burr and highly figured walnut on this very handsome cabinet. Having a moulded cornice over two raised and fielded panelled doors, framed by cross and feather-banding, with original working lock and key, which open to reveal an abundance of storage drawers and shelves within. To the back are 10 solid oak drawers, with original brass handles, fronted by 2 sliding shelves, which can be adjusted to suit size or completely removed. These are over a ledge with a further six larger drawers, also oak lined and having the most glorious burr-walnut fronts with feather banding and retaining the original brass handles. The secretaire drawer section fits the same key that fits the cabinet section, which pulls out and opens to reveal a quality fitted interior, with an arrangement of 5 figured walnut fronted drawers. With original brass handles, and are oak lined. With 10 pigeon holes above. The writing surface is a green, gold-tooled leather, in very good condition. This is over a chest of three long oak lined drawers. Having double half-rounded drawer dividers and matching feather banding to the drawers as above. Possibly would have originally had brass carrying handles to each side, top and bottom as there are marks to indicate this. A stunning beautifully crafted, high quality item, still very relevant for modern day use. Lovely, rich even colour and glowing warm patina. Standing on bracket feet, with later added metal castors. The top section can be removed from the base section. In excellent antique condition. Expected signs of age. Very solid sturdy and strong. The dimensions are taken at highest, widest and deepest points. Viewings are available at our showroom in Kent. Collection in person is very welcome, we are happy to help with loading. Thank You For Visting Fox Run Farms Antiques! Also be sure to check out our other listings this week for more examples of period metalware and antique country furnishings! This 18th century blacksmith made wrought iron candlestick is of European original origin; French or English, and brought over to America by immigrants. This was another great example of early lighting we have acquired from a collector who specialized in lighting and had assembled his collection decades ago. As you can see the piece has an adustable mechanism to the formation of the candle shaft, allowing the user to raise up the candle via the curled tabbed slider. Has a wonderful tri-legged design underneath a circular “up turned” drip pan. Retains the original top hook that would allow the piece to be transported or hung off the back of a chair when not placed atop a table. Some pitting expected for age. Candleshaft has a very slight tilt to it. All signs of age point to usage and expected wear from age. Stands approx 7 3/4 tall. Note the square nut and slightly out of round rivet to the bottom construction. Again a rare example thats been in a private collection for decades and fresh to market for the appreciator of fine lighting and early iron. Thanks for visiting us here at FoxRun-Farms!
