This listing is for a very rare French mantel clock. This clock dates to the early 1800s and features a gorgeous gilt bronze design. The clock is rare because it has automata/automaton features with a moving water fountain. The fountain has its own movement and has a glass rod that spins, giving the illusion of water being spouted. The clock has a gothic design with a cathedral shaped center. The cathedral has gilt bronze knights in armor, brickwork, and spires. The front has has a statue of a young man playing with a monkey. There is a chain that extends between the two. The basin of the fountain is in the shape of a clam shell. The inner part of the clam shell appears to be sterling silver. The clock movement is an early silk thread movement. It has a design allowing the pendulum to swing outside the case. This design was probably created so that the pendulum doesn’t hit the lower automaton movement. The clock measures 8.4 x 4.75 x 14.75 inches. The movements were last serviced in 2018. The lower automaton movement did run when tested (see video). The clock movement might need servicing. Antique French Bontems Singing Bird Cage in great condition, with some patina. Item has all original parts and has not been restored. This sweet treasure sings beautifully. Rest it near a window, and wind it up when there is a party, heads will turn with a smile. The cage has a lovely embossed base and sides. Along with an ornate top. “Made in France” imprinted on base. For sale is a most beautiful and rare French Automaton Clock that I have had in my collection for quite some time. It is one of my favorite items. This is a beautiful clock in completely original condition. It is a silk thread 8 day movement which keeps excellent time. The face of this clock is in remarkable condition, no signs of rubbing or wear. The hands are original. The basin where the glass rod spins to simulate water coming from a lions head, could use a cleaning to brighten the gilding as would the feet and Roman urn on top. The automaton runs well but I think it would benefit from a total service to make it run down to the end of the spring. It should run for a couple of hours, but this gets sluggish after a 1 hour run. The front of this clock is really beautiful with Bah Relief foliates, very well executed and finely detailed. The clock measures 15 inches tall, 7.5 wide and 5 inches deep. The clock comes with 2 period keys, one for the clock and one for the automaton. It chimes on a very sonorous bell at the hour and half hour. Thank you for taking the time to view my sale.
