A Rare Brass Capstan Candlestick /Candle holder dating to mid 17th Century probably Northern European. A fabulous patina with capstan base (or bell base) type, tapered socket with round ejection aperture above a socle, Slightly incised drip-pan flaring upwards. Spreading circular foot featuring double incised concentric lines at foot. It has been repaired in the past as you would expect during its history and looks as though it was attached to a surface at some stage – see images. One expert did suggest this was mid 16th century, however, i believe the form lends itself typically to a 17th century style. Part of a private collection. Please feel free to ask any questions. 5.5” base diameter. The item “Rare Early Brass Capstan Candlestick c17th Great Patina Jacobean c16th c15th” is in sale since Wednesday, June 3, 2020. Wimbledon-Furniture is delighted to offer for sale this stunning and exceptionally rare pair of original hand carved in Black Forest wood very large Bear armchairs. A collectable and signature pair of art furniture armchairs. This pair are exceptional, they date to the early 20. Century circa 1920, they are hand carved from solid slabs of black forest wood timber. Black forest wood gets its name from the darkness of the timber, this is due to the trees being naturally grown very closely, they are very tall meaning no light reaches the timber giving it this wonderful colour. This pair came to me in need of some sympathetic conservation, they had been coated is some kind of thick sticky dark wax which hid the natural colour and timber patina, we have painstakingly removed this substance to reveal the natural colour of the wood and grain. We have then very lightly wax sealed and hand polished them from top to bottom, the finished result is pretty much the best looking pair of these chairs you will ever find. They have old repairs here and there, nothing you wouldnt expect from 100+ year old chairs that are this large and heavy. There are no losses or structural issues what so ever they are a very fine example. Seat height:- 43cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. Black Forest Carving History. In the 1800s the wood carving industry of Switzerland started in the town of Brienz. By the end of the 1800s it had become the driving force for this industry. Swiss wood carvers became world renown and featured at many international exhibitions. Here is a shortlist of the major exhibitions Black Forest Carvings were spotlighted. Great Exhibition, London (1851). Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia (1876). Chicago Worlds Fair, Chicago (1893). Exposition Universelle, Paris (1900). In Europe Black Forest carvings (wares) became a symbol of luxury and wealth. The finest pieces of Black Forest carving was often found in Royal collection and elite collectors homes (usually Victorian world travellers). There was a high demand for these carving especially depicting American Wildlife. Here are some of the American animals that were highly sought after: Bears, Stags, Eagles, Boars and Dogs. In the last 15 years this genre has seen some major changes. Specialty auctions and dealers have been popping up world wide. Along with various books on the subject being published. The biggest misconception about Black Forest carvings is that they originated in Germany. However they are actually the creation of Swiss carvers. Early Examples of Kay Bojesen Rosewood Corkscrews for Universal Steel Company. The corkscrews are in beautiful condition. The wood is so nice and smooth. The only’blemish’ is some cuts on one of the ends to the “winged” one, as seen, but as you will also see – you barely notice that at all when it’s in use. The actual screw has patina, but that just adds to the charm. You can see some really nice ridges along the spiral of the “winged” example, which tell me it’s a lovely early example, where they paid attention to even that little detail. The other odd-shaped one is in great condition, no issues. Some light age to the screw, but nothing bad as you see in the photos. Wing-shaped: Length of wooden handle approx. 10,5 cm / 4.1 in. Height from top of handle to bottom of screw: 10,3 cm / 4.1 in. Odd shaped: Length (bottom of screw to top of wood) approx: 10 cm / 3.9 in. Length of wooden top: 9,8 cm / 3.9 in. Total: 52g+50g / 3.6 oz. I measure in centimeters and grams and then do conversions to US measurements, so the most accurate numbers are the metrics. The US measurements should only be seen as guides. Please ask me any questions you might have. I’m more than happy to help! I write the weight of the items in my listings so you can get an idea of the combined weight, but please remember that packaging will add to the total weight so this is only a guideline. I will calculate and send you the actual cost, so please message me. 0-100 g / 0-3.5 oz. 101-500 g / 3.5-17.6 oz. 0-2000 g / 0-70.5 oz.
