A fine late Commonwealth period silver Puritan spoon in the simple elegant style of the period. The Puritans did not approve of unnecessary ornamentation and this is reflected in the plain design and functionality of this rare survivor, which historically belongs between the earlier Seal Top and Apostle spoons, which had hexagonal stems, and the trefid spoons with their flat stems and oval bowls which came over with the Royal Court from France at the time of the Restoration. Owing to the short duration of their popularity and the scarcity of silver at this period in English history due to the demands of the war, Puritan spoons are very rare and sought after. The Spoon has the initials’RM’ engraved on the back of the stem, together with the London town mark, struck twice, and a maker’s mark TA above a mullet and two pellets, which is recorded on page 124 of Jackson’s’Silver and Gold Marks’. The date mark is worn away, and was in all probability poorly struck originally; you can see where it was on the upper stem, but only a small indent remains. There is a lovely crisp London Town mark in the bowl. This is a particularly pleasing and tactile spoon, smaller than some examples, in super collector’s condition, with no damage or repair and having a good colour. TA London 1655 – 1660. For your perusal I have listed a very rare. Period antique late 18th / early 19th century heavy diamond cut and faceted Irish lead crystal port glasses of which because of their style and the techniques used in their overall presentation most probably originate from the Tyrone glassworks from between c1790 – c1810. Sets like these are very, very rare to find today in this particular condition. The style of these port glasses is very reminiscent of the rarest piece of Irish lead crystal glass known today, that being the Tyrone? Chalice which is purported to have been produced between 1790 – 1800. As you can see via the pictures listed of this set each glass was hand worked in heavy lead content crystal glass, the ovoid bodies topped with a smooth rim were heavily cut with a diamond facet configuration almost likened to a hob nail effect pattern the underside of each bowl was triple stepped cut, down to a octagon cut stem flaring to an octagon cut and faceted foot of which is of the slight lemon squeezer variety with a slightly hollowed base only the outer edge of the underside of the foot being cut. Each of the glasses all have signs of slight inclusions either carbon deposits or tiny air bubbles internally. Each of the glasses weight and dimensions are. 1 332g by 108mm x 73mm. 2 348g by 111mm x 74mm. 3 354g by 110mm x 75mm. 4 362g by 108mm x 74mm. 5 372g by 113mm x 73mm. 6 377g by 112mm x 75mm. General Condition of this very old Set is excellent with only one small rim chip to one glass which does not affect the top of the rim surface, the extreme high points to the body diamond cutting on all glasses have received over the years small chipping, this is to be expected with this type of cutting. If any item has a obvious fault then I have mentioned it. I ask that you read the description and examine the photos carefully. I will also just say that recently I took some detailed pictures of the set to an international Antiques Fair, to get an appraisal from a reputable dealer of such early Irish crystal. Stamped MAUL in 2 places on the top of the mallet head where the handle is inserted. Evidence of a significant amount of use and fabulous old accumulated patina. Would date to the late 18th or early 19th century. Mauls had a practical use in setting stones in their proper position, but as freemasonry traces its origins to stonemasons these were also symbols of authority and power exercised by the Master Mason and thus served a ritual function. Late Georgian/Early Antiq wooden compass in box. Interesting piece of navigational history. The printed Paper rose that Is inside the Compass is in good condition for its age. The Compass needle works well, the Compass and has N on one end & S on the other side. The to the centre there is also a brass stay which is lifted by pressing a pin on the inside this hold the compass points in place for transit. There is a hinge missing to the box. 5cm x 5cm x 1.7cm.
