Collected in the first half of the twentieth century this striking board comes from the Eastern Kimberley and would have belonged to the Gija People. A similar group of boards were collected by Tom McCourt and are attributed to the Gidji sic and are documented in his book – Aboriginal Artefacts page 54 and 55. I owned and handled several of Tom McCourts boards and this one has very similar paintwork with the exception that the carving underneath on this example is a simple diamond outline to one side. The board shows great signs of use and has an encrusted surface and dry patina. It measures 78cm x 14.5cm.
