1912 Rare Royal Doulton Square Vase Dutch Scene. Ethel Beard & Leslie Harradine. Tube Lined Scene of Dutch’Goose-Girl’ Fully Impressed Inc AH Incised. AH – Ada Tosen, Senior Assistant at Royal Doulton. This a very rare and very valuable Royal Doulton vase of square form, that is then tube lined to create a scene of a Dutch girl rounding up a goose from the lightly wooded field. It is a most attractive vase and the two main panels are highlighted against a classic Doulton blue green glazed ground, a short run of an incredible Arts & Crafts piece, that for every successful vase were several firing failures, as each piece went under several firings to such fine vases. This vase was created at a time when Continental Art Nouveau had a short lived influence before Doulton found their own expression, their own Art Nouveau style. Very few survived the manufacturing process and even fewer survived the 110 years since it went on sale for less than 12 months, before the outbreak of WW1 stopped most manufacturing that was not war effort focussed, or the production staff were not called up to fight or work on supplying the frontline. These amazing pieces of art were designed and produced by Ethel Beard and Leslie Harradine, two of the very great names at Royal Doulton, assisted by one of the Senior Assistants Ada Tosen. Ada worked as an assistant to some of the great early names of Doulton, from about 1880 to about the 1920s. This significant and amazing vase was as a result of such wonderful partnerships being at Doulton, prior to WW1, and this is one of their best pieces in my opinion. The vase is approx. 21.5cms tall, approx. 16cms wide and approx. 10cms deep, being in amazing condition, which is remarkable for a vase of 110 years old, a true and rare antique that is highly collectable. I cannot honestly see any restorations or repairs and the impressed marks on the base are correct. The most wonderful of decorations and it needs a home that can admire and protect it in equal measures. The pictures do not do it justice at all, but are important to show the condition.
