7 Frankfurt Kitchen Drawers Schutte-Lihotzky BAUHAUS Modernist Design Early RARE

A set of seven [7] original Bauhaus era aluminium storage drawers. Created for the New Frankfurt Kitchen, designed by Grete Schütte-Lihotzky in 1926. In 1926 Ernst May invited the Austrian architect Grete Schütte-Lihotzky, who had been working with Adolf Loos in Vienna, to be a part of an ambitious project to create new settlements of affordable social housing in Frankfurt. His New Frankfurt plan aimed to mobilise a new type of architecture – using the latest materials and construction methods – to address an acute housing shortage in the city. This had been caused by the economic crises that had gripped Germany in the aftermath of the First World War, culminating in a period of hyperinflation. At the centre of Mays large-scale development scheme a project that would successfully house ten percent of the Frankfurt population in new modernist dwellings by 1930 was Schütte-Lihotzkys remarkably progressive fitted kitchen. Each Frankfurt Kitchen was equipped with a stool, a gas stove, a fold-down ironing board and a concealed wastebin. Built-in storage was provided in the form of cupboards incorporating rows of small removable aluminium drawers, of which the one shown in this listing is a rare survivor. The drawers offered immediate access to everyday ingredients like flour (mehl) and sugar and had pull handles at the front and spouts at the back for easy pouring. The final image is a scan of an original postcard (not included in this sale) showing an installation of the Frankfurt Kitchen at the Deutscher Werkbund’s Die Wohnung expo of 1927. The event, which involved among others Behrens, Gropius, Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe and Oud, provided an opportunity for May and Schütte-Lihotzky to showcase their vision of egalitarian housing settlements to an international audience. This exposure eventually resulted in an invitation – three years later – from the Soviet Union to reproduce New Frankfurt-style developments on a truly mass scale. Approx 110mm wide x 140 high x 240 length. The set includes 7 differently labelled storage drawers. Each storage drawer has a stamped title. This marks them out as the very earliest production – an extremely rare find. Later productions had interchangeable label plates, held in place with tiny screws. The drawers are titled as follows. Good to very good indeed. As you would expect the drawers are in well used original condition and there is surface patina and evidence of a few knocks consistent with decades of use. On four of the drawers the struts with the makers mark have been removed by the original owner, presumably to facilitate easier pouring or to fit within a custom made cupboard unit. This does not impact functionality and they will look amazing incorporated into a modern kitchen. There are no signs of restoration/repair. A truly outstanding find! Rare early 20th century antique post office pine chest of drawers

Rare early 20th century pine chest of 9 drawers. These were purpose made for use in a small countryside post office. The chest has 9 slender drawers all of the same depth. Each drawers has central dividers and cut away sides (see photos). Constructed from waxed and stained pine with simple turned pine drawer pulls. Original makers label to inside one drawer (see photo 4). The chest is an ideal size to suit all homes, and its slender style allows it fit the smallest alcove perfectly. This is an unusual chest and one that will enhance both retail and domestic environments. 106.5cm height x 71.5cm wide x 47.5cm deep. This is a very rare French farmhouse hunting table table à gibier sourced in the Loire Valley – from the early 18th Century. This table was used to present game after a hunt, which was considered to be a pastime of Royalty and the privileged class. This table that features 2 drawers (one in the front and one on the side) can be used as kitchen / dining table (it can sit up to 6 people) or a kitchen island. It shows some signs of wear consistent with age and use and signs of extinct woodworm holes that we have treated for good measure. Full of character this table crafted in beech, elm and oak has aged to a stunning very light colour and would make the most stunning statement piece in any home. RARE EARLY 1800s CAMPAIGN CHEST OF DRAWERS FITTED SECRETAIRE & BOOK KEEP ABOVE. This is an early 1800s fitted campaign chest. The top section of drawer fronts slide out to reveal a fitted secretaire. The bottom three drawers are working drawers. With original book keep on top. This looks as though it may have had fabric or similar around originally. This is a fantastic rare piece of campaign furniture. It is in lovely original condition with stunning colour and patination.
