RARE ANTIQUE EARLY VICTORIAN faux TORTOISESHELL INLAID SILVER CARVED DOGS HEAD
Posted by admin On July 19, 2020
We are pleased to be able to offer this. Stunning Extremely Rare Early Victorian Silver & faux TORTOISESHELL Carved Dogs Head Mounted Ladies Purse. I would estimate this rare purse dates to circa 1850 making it nearly 170 years old, this beautiful Victorian purse is crafted in faux Tortoiseshell with curved edges giving it a wonderful tactile feel, the colours are beautiful with rich deep oranges and browns creating such a superb effect, to the front it is mounted with the most beautiful yet unique very special carved dog head image, this is so very rare and has the most amazing detail, from the dogs very life like unusual eyes, his detailed nose and his very beautiful long hair, I would say this must be a female dog as the dog has a lovely bow to the top of her head, I have never seen a carved dog head like this ever, its so very rare, on the other side is a solid silver cartouche, the hinges work well and I believe are a white metal, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have once belonged to a wealthy Victorian Lady and been used on many an occasion, many years ago when things were so very different, this would have been a talking point as it is so unusual and rare, my photos really don’t do it justice, you will not find another like this on the market. Circa 1850, though maybe earlier. 7 cm by 5 cm. The condition for its age is lovely, just one small pin missing, there is no clasp for closing, though it appear there never was a clasp, there is just a little spring back when closed, that being said it doesnt detractat all from its rare beauty, just mentioned for accuracy. Please study the photos as these form an integral part of the description. An unquestionably exquisite and fine addition for any uncompromising collector or as a display piece. A final few words. Rare Early Victorian Woolwork with Dogs in a Formal Garden Setting
Posted by admin On December 15, 2019
In the 18th and 19th centuries it was regarded as fashionable among the upper classes to have a black servant and they sometimes feature in the paintings of these times. I personally have found only a few needlework pieces from these centuries that included servants. This piece, dated 1844, was completed 11 years after the passage of the Act of the British Parliament banning slavery, but the industrial revolution and the rise of the middle classes in the Victorian era preserved and expanded the concept of having servants around for everyday tasks. This piece, as opposed to other Victorian works that more often featured dogs and children, shows a different side of the household. The servant, dressed in a colorful costume of a red jacket, striped pants and red hat, brings an air of formal 18th century life in large estates, complete with lakes, follies and large gardens. The elements that make up this wonderful large piece of woolwork embroidery add to the relaxed atmosphere of 18th century England. The work was done in fine stitches of tent stitch that closely border on pettipoint, if not pettipoint, indeed. Because it was worked in fine wool yarn on a tightly woven linen ground, the detail is exceptional. The dogs themselves are outstanding, occupying a large part of the composition. But I feel that the garden itself is one of the principle attractions in this Victorian needlework picture. This woolwork picture is housed in its original hand-stained pine frame that was made to resemble maple. There is a wide wood and gilded slip, as well as the original steel hooks from which to hang it. The glass is bubbled and wavy, adding another early element to the piece. The condition is excellent. Like other Victorian pieces, there is a certain degree of fading, which one would expect from a piece that is 173 years old. However, most of the colors show good color retention. There are no stains and no insect damage. On the back is a label that reads: Sarah Savin Bushnell, July 8th 1844. I have no doubt that this is the original paper label from this piece. This is a stunning, rare, large and wonderful piece of early Victorian needlework. It would certainly make a strong decorative statement in any room you choose to hang it. It measures 33-3/4 inches wide by 29-1/2 inches high, including the solid frame that has a depth of 2-1/2 inches. Personal and cashiers checks also accepted. Beautiful Early Big Rare Antique Staffordshire Spaniel Dog’s. Each One weights in at over 4 pounds(See photo’s of them on scale). These show all the obvious signs that they are real. Typical old base does not have casting holes. Note typical flaws such as firing lines, glaze frizzle, bumps and pitting(Shown in Photo’s with green arrow as you will see a bump and un-glazed spot on back tail on one) 3. Paint from the sides has dripped down over the edges of the base like on these you will see. Shows fine brush strokes on the muzzle and two dog’s are never painted the same like these two. Firing holes were made to release expanding gas which builds up inside hollow figures during firing. Typical firing holes average about one-eighth inch in diameter. Firing holes may or may not be present in original dogs. They may appear in the base or other locations such as the back 6. Most gold trim used on original dogs has a softer appearance than new gold trim & rarely has a mirror-like reflection, it is usually dull and almost always shows some random wear. Most gold trim used on original dogs has a softer appearance than new gold trim. Crazing in new glazes is often darkened with shoe polish, dark paint or vegetable stains either at the place of manufacture or after a piece has entered the market. Although many old pieces do show crazing, crazing is not in itself any guarantee or an indicator of when, where or how a piece of pottery was made, you’ll see that the old glaze/and crazing these dogs remain consistent from the underneath of the base through the body and face. The One to the right has some damage-either from it’s age or it took a bump at some point it’s very long life. The good news is-it looks to have never come apart into pieces-it’s tight and this area and not at all loose or coming apart. If you look at the detailed photo’s at the bottom with “small stick on green arrows” you will see where the damage suddenly stops. This is the only area of damage to both dogs.
