Rare Early Collectors Indonesian Legong Dancing Doll
This rare and early collectors’ Indonesian Legong Dancing Doll is a beautiful antique original from Southeast Asia. The dolls are manipulated by puppeteers, who use their hands and feet to move the dolls’ arms and legs. The dolls are believed to have originated in the 18th century, and they were originally used in religious ceremonies. However, they soon became popular as a form of entertainment, today they are now performed all over Indonesia. The dolls are often used in performances that tell stories from traditional Indonesian mythology. The doll is made of a hand carved wooden body with it’s original fabric dress. The dress displays exquisite detailing that showcase the rich culture of the region. The doll is clearly not a tourist souvenir as are those that are sometimes offered for sale, this one is an original and authentic piece that represents the rich heritage of Indonesia. I guess the item to date to around 1900, perhaps a bit earlier. The doll shows some signs of expected wear and tear, the dress being a little’grubby looking’ The sticks are currently separate, removed to display the doll. They could however easily be tied back on to the hands where they were originally. The head can be rotated and removed as shown within the images. The doll stands at around 68cm somewhat larger than the later tourist ones that are generally around 30cm.

Rare Antique Articulated Collectors Doll from Kammer Reinhardt, Early 1900. Beautiful Antique Doll from German Doll Kammer Reinhardt dated early 1900s. Head by Simon Halbig. Exquisite Finish and Expression with Eyes that close when she lies down. Neck, Arms and Legs are Articulated. Weight without Stand: 1,057 Kg. The doll presents some cracks on her body and the body appears to have been glued back just below the voice box. This may have been done to access the voice box though we are not certain of this. Head appears to be free of cracks on close examination. Scalp is glued to the head. Kindly refer to our pictures for further details on this Antique Doll. This doll is part of a collection that once belonged to a French Nun in the early 20th Century who looked after children in France after the war. Upon her passing these dolls were found in her attic and passed on to her nephew who looked after them and displayed them in a cabinet away from Dust and Sunlight for many years. Whether those dolls were acquired by the nun at the time or brought over by the children she looked after and then left behind is unknown but it is entirely possible they were once played with. Every effort has been made to describe this doll accurately and to the best of our knowledge as we are neither antique dealers or collectors.
