This chair is in very good condition, the double-sided inset enamel sign is in excellent condition and reads: Restu washes white overnight, by William Gossage & Sons Ltd. It also has its original manufacturers plate which reads: A Janes & Sons, Chair manufacturers, West End Road, High Wycombe. The Elm Frame & Seat are in very solid condition but the chair does have some old, treated worm holes. Please see all photos. A unusually large primitive early 19th century Irish stick back’hedge’ chair, also known as a famine chair. The chair originates from the rural areas where a large part of the population in the 18th and 19th century lived in single-roomed dwellings, demonstrating the widespread rural poverty of the time. Featuring a thick single slab sycamore seat, turned beech front legs and ash arms, sticks and sycamore comb. The chair of wonderful colour and character, is in robust condition for age, with one fascinating period repair of a rear leg having been replaced in chiseled stick form rather than the other three beech turned originals. There are signs of some historic worm activity but the chair is structurally sound. Of particularly unusual, large size. Seat Thickness: 4.3cms. Rock solid condition sitting on ebonised walnut turned legs with the original cope and colinson brass castors which pre date the Howard and son’s stamped castor. The back leg is stamped 16877 8848. As you can see the chair has great colour and patina. This rare early chair has a high hoop back with scribed decoration. There are turned spindles above a hooped arm and shaped supports. The seat is saddled and a single piece of solid super grainy Elm. The Ash legs are well tuned and joined by an H stretcher. A rare survivor in great retail condition ready for your home.
