Rare Original Early 19th Century Roman Grand Tour Rosso Antico Marble Lion Bath
Century Roman Grand Tour Rosso Antico marble bath with Lion head detailing. This bath is stunning, I have never seen one of this size before, they are usually around 40% smaller, this must weigh 30kgs / 66lbs approximately. It has the Lions head to the front, rings either side, the marble is thick and with a beautifully veined patina. The marble on this is very thick and as mentioned it has a glorious vein, it looks to have a crack running all the way around, I dont think its ever broken because there are no signs of repair, it over 170 years old so we can forgive it some patina marks, most collector like to see some ware and damage, it helps to prove the age. Width:- 40.5cm. Depth:- 18.5cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE, we can have it delivered nationwide to include Scotland Wales and Ireland. Antique Rare early 17th century GERMAN carved Corpus Christi Home Altar Crucifix
Rare early 17th century GERMAN painted wooden framed carved. Corpus Christi/ Home Altar. These miniature (counted small size in their own time) altarpieces were the centre of private chapels. And cells of noblemen and clerics and, as such, they formed the focus of their solitary prayers and confessions. The work of the sculptor is remarkable. By exaggerating the size of certain anatomical parts, it amplifies the subject’s strength. The quality of the carving is particularly evident in the facial expression and the fine curls of the face. Alongside the skilful rendering of the anatomy, the figure is also characterised by the naturalistic ponderation. Of the upper and lower body. With vertical hairline cracks and yellowing. Mounted on a velvet covered wooden panel. Most of the time only the corpus remained without the frame holding it. Very rare, well preserved original condition, Southern Germany, around 1700. 20k hammered price at several auctions this year! Size of frame : 28 x 33 cm. Gilding and painting is worn. Size of corpus : Height 15 cm, width of arms 10 cm. It can be removed from the frame. Extraordinarily rare early 18th Century, dating from 1705 babys cot coverlet also used for family christenings for many generations. The condition of the fabric is strong, no holes – completely hand made with distinctive 18thC embroidery and pink silk piping along the edges. There are some stains which would be expected with age and an item that has been used and are. There is a provenance label sewn into a corner from 1882 that dates the coverlet used by eight generations from 1705. Would be a wonderful gift for a new baby or collectors item. Very Rare Pair Of Original Early 20th Century Black Forest Wood Bear Armchairs
Wimbledon-Furniture is delighted to offer for sale this stunning and exceptionally rare pair of original hand carved in Black Forest wood very large Bear armchairs. A collectable and signature pair of art furniture armchairs. This pair are exceptional, they date to the early 20. Century circa 1920, they are hand carved from solid slabs of black forest wood timber. Black forest wood gets its name from the darkness of the timber, this is due to the trees being naturally grown very closely, they are very tall meaning no light reaches the timber giving it this wonderful colour. This pair came to me in need of some sympathetic conservation, they had been coated is some kind of thick sticky dark wax which hid the natural colour and timber patina, we have painstakingly removed this substance to reveal the natural colour of the wood and grain. We have then very lightly wax sealed and hand polished them from top to bottom, the finished result is pretty much the best looking pair of these chairs you will ever find. They have old repairs here and there, nothing you wouldnt expect from 100+ year old chairs that are this large and heavy. There are no losses or structural issues what so ever they are a very fine example. Seat height:- 43cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. Black Forest Carving History. In the 1800s the wood carving industry of Switzerland started in the town of Brienz. By the end of the 1800s it had become the driving force for this industry. Swiss wood carvers became world renown and featured at many international exhibitions. Here is a shortlist of the major exhibitions Black Forest Carvings were spotlighted. Great Exhibition, London (1851). Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia (1876). Chicago Worlds Fair, Chicago (1893). Exposition Universelle, Paris (1900). In Europe Black Forest carvings (wares) became a symbol of luxury and wealth. The finest pieces of Black Forest carving was often found in Royal collection and elite collectors homes (usually Victorian world travellers). There was a high demand for these carving especially depicting American Wildlife. Here are some of the American animals that were highly sought after: Bears, Stags, Eagles, Boars and Dogs. In the last 15 years this genre has seen some major changes. Specialty auctions and dealers have been popping up world wide. Along with various books on the subject being published. The biggest misconception about Black Forest carvings is that they originated in Germany. However they are actually the creation of Swiss carvers. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE, we can have it delivered nationwide to include Scotland Wales and Ireland.
