RARE Africian Agba Stool Kingdom of Benin Edo Peoples of Nigeria early 20th Century beautifully Carved made from what looks like Teak wood. It measures 24″ long by 11″ wide by 19 tall. These stools were usually produced by carvers in Omada, the association of young men who served the Oba as palace pages and sword bearers and who carved in their spare time. The tops and legs tend to be intricately carved with scenes from Benin history, palace ceremonies and traditional Benin motifs. Two examples from the second half of the 19th century are in the Perls collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This top of this stool depicts a ceremony with Oba and two other dignitaries signing some inportant agreement or treaty and dates from the early to mid 20th Century. The ellipse shaped painted enamel railways sign, in peacock blue lettering to an ivory ground reading Please Leave This Lavatory As You Would Wish to Find It in capital lettering, and surviving from the first quarter of twentieth century England. In good overall order, the sign has some restoration to the edges as photographed. The two original holes remain for door or wall mounting. This sign would have been mounted to the toilet door in a station and we cannot find another comparable example on or offline. There have been countless reproductions of this kind of sign throughout the 21st century. An extremely rare original sign that raises a smile and one that can still be used to good effect today. Tobacco Jar Antique Majolica Pottery Humidor Early 20. This is a rare antique Austrian Majolica Tobacco Jar known as the SMOKING ALLIGATOR. This two-piece tobacco jar, or humidor, is modeled in deep relief. And glaze are very well done. The subject is a well-attired Alligator Smoking a Pipe and wearing large hooded cape. The head forms the top. The lid (head) has a recessed area to put a damp sponge and is nicely fitted on the matching base. On both the top and the base, the inside is glazed, and the rim foot is unglazed; the underside base is glazed. The tobacco jar is decorated with stylized accents, and colors including a background decorated with green, yellow, pink, and brown. On the glazed center of the underside base, 4873 and 37 are impressed marks; the underside rimfoot is unglazed. This is fine antique Austrian majolica, earthenware that has an opaque tin glaze, made in Austria. The estimated date is 1900, early 20th Century. This Smoking Alligator Tobacco Jar is in good condition- noting the underside of the top has three rim chips, the largest is 0.5 in. X 0.2 in. The top has a shallow rim chip on the inside of the top rim 0.7 in. X 0.4 x 0.2 in. And two lines on the back. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description.
