Eleutherius, an early Christian martyr, known as the patron of prisoners. His memory is celebrated in various Christian traditions. Eleutherius was the bishop of Ilyric (now part of the Balkans), who suffered for his faith. The image of the saint is often depicted with the attributes of the bishop, as well as on the presented icon, where traditional elements of vestment and blessing are visible. The name Eleutherius means “freedom”, and therefore he was prayed by the fighters for independence during the Greek uprising and the Orthodox of the Greek Church in Albania under the oppression of communist atheism.
