For sale is a most beautiful and rare French Automaton Clock that I have had in my collection for quite some time. It is one of my favorite items. This is a beautiful clock in completely original condition. It is a silk thread 8 day movement which keeps excellent time. The face of this clock is in remarkable condition, no signs of rubbing or wear. The hands are original. The basin where the glass rod spins to simulate water coming from a lions head, could use a cleaning to brighten the gilding as would the feet and Roman urn on top. The automaton runs well but I think it would benefit from a total service to make it run down to the end of the spring. It should run for a couple of hours, but this gets sluggish after a 1 hour run. The front of this clock is really beautiful with Bah Relief foliates, very well executed and finely detailed. The clock measures 15 inches tall, 7.5 wide and 5 inches deep. The clock comes with 2 period keys, one for the clock and one for the automaton. It chimes on a very sonorous bell at the hour and half hour. Thank you for taking the time to view my sale. Very Early Ross London Petzval Portrait lens with a cemented achromat lens at the front and two air spaced lenses (flint+crown) at the rear. 4355 (very early Circa 1851/52). Focal length: 320mmApprox. Speed: f4.5 approx. Ross lenses are synonymous for their quality and the early portrait petzval lenses were amongst the very best lenses for their time. In fact Dallmeyer worked for Ross for some time before setting up his own business in c1860. Probably made/intended for 6×4″(cabinet) format although covers very well on my whole plate(6.5″x8.5 format) camera. May also cover 10×8 especially at portrait distance(not tested). The outside of the brass lens barrel shows much patina and wear/scratches commensurate with age. There are some dings/dents to the hood. The barrel has been cut/modified possibly by W. Optically the lens is in good condition especially when considering it’s age. Clean / clear to look though. On closer inspection there is some small edge separation on front lens. Also a few quite deep scratches/scuffs marks on rear glass. There are also some small dust / cleaning marks / small scratches and some micro bubbles all normal for an antique lens of this age and nothing to affect performance. The rack&pinion is not working smoothly! It appears to slip/get stuck mostly in one direction, although if helped by hand it can be made to work somewhat but it’s really not so important as usually the camera should be used to focus. There is a w aterhouse stop slot that has been made later but no stops included! All lens elements & hood can be unscrewed. Height: 6.7 inches including hood. Glass diameter: 3.25 inches. Rear screw thread diameter: 4.2 inches. Lens comes with front cap(poor condition/falling apart). PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO FLANGE WITH THIS LENS! THESE EARLY ROSS LENSES DO NOT COME ALONG OFTEN SO ACT QUICKLY IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS OUT ON THIS ONE! ALL SENSIBLE OFFERS CONSIDERED! Please look at all pictures and do not hesitate to ask any questions! PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN ANTIQUE LENS OVER 100 YEARS OLD THEREFORE SHOWS WEAR AND TEAR AS EXPECTED FOR A LENS OF THIS AGE!
