Extremely Rare Early Islamic Rock Crystal Chess piece c1000AD Fatimid Egypt
Extremely Rare Early Islamic Rock Crystal Chess piece c1000AD Egypt. We are delighted to offer this rare and early Islamic rock crystal deeply carved chess or gaming piece 9th-11th Century. This delightful and rare rock crystal chess piece is very tactile and is beautifully carved. The deeply carved bevelled cuts have a’u’ shape and the overall appearance is very pleasing. There is a horizontal stepped cut at the base and it has been suggested that a band of gold or silver would have been around this section to differentiate the two sides in a chess game (see Al Sabah Catalogue of Early Islamic Chess and Gaming Pieces by Deborah Freeman Fahid, London 2018). Rock crystal has long been surrounded by mystery and myths with Bishops instructing crusaders to leave everything behind except rock crystal vessels during the medieval wars. This is how various rock crystal pieces ended up in Cathedrals throughout Europe in the Middle Ages (see Fahid, 2018). Rock crystal was thought to have magical properties such as changing colour if the liquid poured into it was poisoned. Chess is known as the Game of Kings as who else had the time and felt secure enough to play such an absorbing game in ancient times. Ancient chess and gaming pieces were made for the elite in society and the materials, amount of carving involved reflected this. Early Islamic chess pieces have a track record for attracting record amounts when they come up for sale. The Sotheby’s example is very similar apart from the additional design elements such as the vertical hatching which would mark it out as the’King’. This piece has been in the same private collection for several decades, safely stored in a display cabinet. It is housed in a purpose made domed wooden box that is over 200 years old with a collector’s label on the underside from the same period. The name on the label is from a collector who lived in England and who is recorded in the 1771 population census (full details on request). This piece stands just 4cm in height but is a true heavyweight among ancient chess pieces. There is some wear such as small chips around the piece as shown on the images above. This beautifully carved piece also has some minor inclusions in the crystal that can be seen from the underside. However, this piece is around 95% clear and has no internal fissures which are often found in this type of carved rock crystal. From a Private North of England Collection. Viewing is strictly by appointment and a minimum of 48 hours notice is required as no items are stored on site. All of our Islamic Art is guaranteed to be genuine and as described. We also further guarantee that our artefacts are legitimately sourced. TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE. Cheques only acceptable from UK Banks in sterling. Please DO NOT leave your questions until the last couple of hours of the listing! All dimensions and measurements are approximate. Extremely RARE, UNIQUE EARLY AMERICAN ANTIQUE LINSEY WOOLSEY PATCHWORK QUILT
EXTREMELY RARE, Particularly Old, Early American Antique New England LINSEY WOOLSEY QUILT. DESCRIPTION: This is a particularly early & incredibly rare linsey woolsey quilt. Nice bright colors and color choices. Very nice, early American colonial design. Body is mustard/light green strips, and 3-sided border, made to drape over sides of bed, has large diamonds. Very nice star, geometric, and sash pattern quilting as shown. ALL HAND STITCHED AND HAND SEWN. Linsey Woolsey is a strong, coarse fabric, common in the US during the colonial era and also among the lower classes in England for the past few hundred years. Known for its warmth and durability. Linsey Woolsey quilts typically have a shiny appearance at least on the top; this one is shiny on the top, while the backing fabric is a coarse material. THIS IS DEFINITELY AN EXTREMELY EARLY QUILT FROM THE DESIGN, PATTERN, STYLE, AND STITCHING CHARACTERISTICS, AND APPEARS TO BE FROM THE LATE 1700’s – EARLY 1800’s. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST, EARLIEST QUILTS YOU WILL FIND. The back is in very good condition. Some piecing, appears original with early stitching, to make the most of the fabric available. Also on the front it appears that fabrics/colors, e. Were chosen based on what they had available, as you would expect on an early farm. Binding is original and generally in good condition, but separated from the quilt in places. Some age related damage in places, but pretty decent condition for its age. Some very early staining in one area. This is a great early quilt by itself. It is also a perfect candidate for a complete restoration or could be used in historic fabric classes or education. It could also be used for cut up for high quality quilt projects, or cut up to enable a number of collectors to have an example for framing. I have not laundered this and it should never be laundered in any way. Measures approximately 80″ x 92″. THIS IS A GREAT PIECE FOR SERIOUS QUILT COLLECTORS, ENTHUSIASTS, OR THOSE INTERESTED IN HISTORICAL FABRICS. In over 40 years of quilt collecting this is the ONLY ONE that I have ever seen offered for sale. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS!! Swimming in the right direction? Extremely Rare Late 17th Early 18th Century Dutch Netherlands Marine Compass!!!! I say amaZingly because it is one of the most advanced designs of compasses for its time that I have come across! The needle is half white steel and half blackened steel, the white portion points North perhaps since Europeans are generally speaking white at that time, while the South is blackened since the south is primarily inhabited by darker folks, regardless the two different colors make it much easier and thus faster to differentiate between North and South, and the shape of the needle makes it much easier to follow even by someone with poor eye sight, extremely intelligent. Most likely created for the Dutch East India or Dutch West India Company, which could not function with-out such devices, the GPS of its time. It is the only compass I have eVer seen with a Z for south (Zuiden), which clearly and definitively indicate the compass is Dutch. The measurements of the wooden case are approximately 10.2 cm x 9.35 cm x 3.55 cm (4″ x 3 10.8/16″ x 1 6.5/16). The brass ring surrounding the compass is approximately 8.75 cm (3 7/16) in diameter. On the brass portion, the decorations, lines, and arabic numerals were all hand engraved by one of the worlds unknown but best compass makers I have eVer encountered. I have seen a Dutch? Compass, I inserted a question mark because the South was an S and not a Z, and of what I deem of much lesser quality fetch a sum of approximately 55 thousand USDs! So price-wise this beauty is a gift! The wooden case box is partially cracked on both sides, the crystal glass has some scratches as can be observed on the upper right quadrant of the second image and the upper left quadrant of the 5th image, and some points of oxidation (darker colored areas), but remains a fully functional and beautiful compass worthy of any museum! A great addition to any museum quality marine or scientific collection! Definitely a gift for any high level intellectual mind! Please feel free to check out my other Museum Quality Collection. For the year of our Lord 2019 I wish you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Sail Wisely & God Bless. Extremely Rare Wooden Early Antique Folk Art Doll 50cm/20 Inches As Found
Extremely Rare Wooden Early Antique Folk Art Doll 50cm/20 Inches As Found. Hard to find early wooden folk art doll, she dates from around 1820. She has such a lovely presence to her. Wooden head and shoulder plate carved from one piece of wood. Lovely long neck carved features with sweet smile and carved ears. Remnants of her original paint. She reminds me of an early type Izannah Walker doll. But she was made in the UK (probably Scotland) as I have had similar dolls before but they are so hard to find now. I hope someone can restore her legs and she would be really amazing. Dressed in very simple old cream dress with pink smock type top. Condition: Lower legs missing. Right hand one finger missing. Obvious wear to head and body. No re-paint I feel. Old Cracks and rubs to head. Please see pictures, as they give more details. #009 Extremely Rare Early Gledhill Brook 13362 Fusee Time Recorder Wall Clock
I have for sale one of the very first Gledhill Brook oak cased clocking in machines ever made, and looking in my book containing the company serial numbers, this could even be a prototype for future models, as in January 1918 when general production started, the very first serial number was 13800, this machine has the serial number 13362. The solid oak case has been thoroughly stripped and cleaned, finished off with a thorough dark oak beeswax. All the locks and keys, including the lock for the In/Out bar work perfectly and securely. The Gledhill T-bar crank handle is also present. All the brassware has been dipped in horological cleaner, and now sparkles like new. The heavy solid brass Empire chain fusee movement is clean, has been checked, oiled, and is operating perfectly with an excellent swing from the pendulum. Timekeeping is of course excellent from a mechanism of this quality. The heavy cast iron printer has been cleaned, and the blue ribbon re-inked. This printer is a rare item due to it having not just the common hour/minute/day wheels, but also the date and month, not many of these types around. The printer stamps the information on the card as shown in the photos. This unit is in excellent condition, fully operational, and comes with all its keys. Included are 5 clocking in cards. I do have 2 seperate metal card holders (not advertised) if required for sale. Dimensions are 43″ high by 19″ wide by 11 deep. This has to be collection only due to its weight. I can work around whenever suitable without a problem. If you have any questions relating to this item or any of my other items for sale, please contact me on 07758885795. Extremely rare early 18th Century baby cot coverlet with provenance from 1705
Extraordinarily rare early 18th Century, dating from 1705 babys cot coverlet also used for family christenings for many generations. The condition of the fabric is strong, no holes – completely hand made with distinctive 18thC embroidery and pink silk piping along the edges. There are some stains which would be expected with age and an item that has been used and are. There is a provenance label sewn into a corner from 1882 that dates the coverlet used by eight generations from 1705. Would be a wonderful gift for a new baby or collectors item.
