Rare early Steiff cone nosed apricot teddy c1904/5
Posted by admin On April 8, 2019
Billy is a wonderful early kapok stuffed Steiff Apricot cone nosed teddy bear c1904/5 measuring 12 with around 90% of his apricot mohair remaining. He actually looks more like a possum than a teddy bear with his pointy cone nose. Billy does have some repairs including a glued insert to his nose and also repairs to both his ankles (please see pics). All pads have been recovered, as well as some other old repairs and small tears at the neck joint. However he has such a sweet endearing expression with ears set low down on the side of his head. No button but would have been a blank button. The item “Rare early Steiff cone nosed apricot teddy c1904/5″ is in sale since Sunday, April 7, 2019. Rare Early 3 Step Herbert Terry 1227 Anglepoise Lamp Original Green & Chrome
Posted by admin On April 7, 2019
Purveyors of wonderful things. Hello and welcome to the sale of this rare and sought after Anglepoise lamp. Made by Herbert Terry & Sons of Redditch in the early 1930’s this is the first example of the classic 1227 desk lamp and is identified by its three step base and small shade (amongst other things but I won’t bore you with the details). This particular example is best described as a’survivor’ and was in a pretty poor condition prior to restoration. The shade and base come in their original green crinkle paint and have been cleaned and given a light coating of wax to help preserve the patina. The paintwork isn’t too bad, but expect surface rust and chips to the paint. The arms were chromed but much of this had come away. Any loose chrome was removed and the bare steel has been burnished then waxed. This finish gives a nice patina and doesn’t look over restored. All the springs, tensioners, bars and bolts are present and correct and have been lightly cleaned and replaced. A original Crabtree bakelite has been sourced and fitted with three meters of new good quality fabric cable, that is correctly earthed to the frame as per the original wiring and fitted with a new 3A plug. Lastly some new green felt has been applied to the base. The lamp holds its position well, however the shade rotating left and right is a little stiff as is the fork in the base. Neither affects its everyday use and isn’t bad for a lamp thats almost 90 years old! Please have a good look at the photographs as they form part of the description and contact me if you have any further questions. If you’re looking for a lamp of this type be careful, many have been made up from later lamps, repainted or missing original parts, springs etc. A lot of info in available on the internet and well worth a read. The lamp measures (in cm) 60 tall, 44 deep and 15 wide (base). It weighs 4.3kg. You are more than welcome to collect or I can deliver locally if needed. I have many unique antique and vintage items, please take a look. As unique items are hard to price all of our listings carry a make a best offer option, feel free to use it, however please be realistic. Rare Find Early Victorian Walnut Howard & Son’s Fully Restored Club Armchair
Posted by admin On April 6, 2019
There are around 50-100 high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. I have a Howard and Son’s sofa listed under my other items that has just been restored to the same standard. This chair has been on a journey, as you can see from the pre-restoration pictures it came to me with a rather bulky modern upholstery on it, I carefully and painstakingly removed the modern fabric to find a stunning rare walnut framed early Victorian Howard & Sons armchair complete with some original distressed upholstery, they had even taken the time to cut out the little H & S initials from the fabric. The back leg is stamped with the serial number, the castors are Cope & Collingson which is the only company Howard & Sons would use as they could make them to Howard’s specification. The chair has been fully restored as you can see, its been reupholstered by a third generation Victorian upholsterer and then hand dyed this lovely tobacco brown colour by my leather polishers, simply put this chair is the finest example you will find anywhere today. Howard & Sons are simply put the finest chair makers in history, the Queen even has a private collection. Width:- 74.5cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. A History of Howard and Sons. The name of Howard and Sons is probably one of the best known and highly sought after names in Upholstered furniture. Over the next few paragraphs I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator under the name John Howard and Sons. The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St. By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the the well established decorators Lenygon and Morant appear to take over the name with the business address being given as 31 Old Burlington St (Lenygon and Morants premesis since 1909). Lenygon and Morant later moved to South Audley St where from 1954 they advertised as’Makers of Howard Chairs and Sofas’. In 1967 the owners of Lenygon and Morant open Howard Chairs Limited, the company operating from Lyme St continue to make high quality sofas and armchairs. Exhibitions and Important Houses. At the 1862 International Exhibition (The 3rd World Expo) Howard and Sons entered a suite of library furniture for which they won a prize. They also went on to exhibit at the Paris World’s Fair, called an Exposition Universelle twice; once in 1878 and again in 1900. Also at the Exposition Internationale d’Anvers 1894 (International Exposition/World Fair Antwerp). Winning Prizes at them all including 1 silver and 2 golds. They also employed their eclectic styles working for many important clients providing furniture for important houses such as Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire, Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire and Stokesay Court, Shropshire. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE, we can have it delivered nationwide to include Scotland Wales and Ireland. Wimbledon-Furniture is a privately owned family ran business out of Wimbledon SW19, we have four large storage warehouses, if you have any questions my number is under the business sellers information, please feel free to call or text. Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition. Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade. Rare Early Masons Patent Ironstone Japan Pattern Fruit Stand Antique c1820
Posted by admin On April 4, 2019
8432 Masons Ironstone Fruit Stand. A rare early GM & CJ period Mason’s fruit stand. It bears the’Mason’s Patent Ironstone China’ impressed mark in two lines to the underside, and this marks was used around 1820 making this piece George III in period. The stand is decorated in the Japan pattern with oriental style designs in an Imari coloured palette. The stand top is of shallow navette shape with scalloped detail and moulded decoration to the edges. The stand has further gilt decoration with leaf shaped details. This is a rare survivor from this early period of Masons production, and a very unusual and desirable piece. It probably came from a full dinner and serving service and was likely the central feature. As well as fruit this item would be great for fancies and other items. Some wear to the face with some gilt rubbing and minor wear to the pattern. To the central area of the plinth base there are gilt knops which hand down either side of the central platform, one has been knocked off and is lost. There are minor firing flaws as you would expect for this period. Small chip to footrim. The base has warped a little during firing, so the item rocks a bit on a dead flat surface. Height 17 cms (6.75 inches). Width 36 cms (14 inches) across top. Weight 1540 grams (before packing). Stock Code: 8432 FB14-2.
