Charles Mielatz Rare Early Florida Etching The Squall, Lake Okeechobee 1915
Rare Early Florida Etching by Charles Mielatz – The Squall, Lake Okeechobee 1915. “The Squall, Lake Okeechobee, Florida” 1915. Etching on cream wove stock. Signed in pencil under the image : Mielatz Imp. Signed and dated in the plate, lower right. Annotated in pencil, by the artist at the lower edge with the title and edition information. (edition of 25 – all states / 5th State – 2nd Impression). A very fine etching by this famous master etcher depicting a storm on the Florida lake near the Everglades. Very dramatic and realistic in feeling, with an impressionist technique. Etchings by this artist usually depict New York, Midwestern and New England scenes and Southern images are rare. This early view of Florida was printed by Mielatz in a total edition of only 25. PLATE SIZE – 5″ x 7″. SHEET SIZE – 7 3/4″ x 9 7/8″. Darkening to the upper corners, well away from the image. Ready to mat and frame. Charles Frederick William Mielatz was born in Bredding, Germany in 1864. He immigrated to the United States as a young boy and studied at the Chicago School of Design. Mostly self-taught, his first prints were large New England landscapes reminiscent of the painter-etcher school of American Art. Around 1890 he started to produce prints of New York City and by the time of his death, the number totaled over ninety images. He was a master technician in the field of etching, reworking many of his plates to get the exact feeling he was seeking. It was not unusual for him to have three or more states to a print in an edition run. On some he would simply reduce the plate size, on others, he would remove entire sections of the image to redraw it. He was one of the early pioneers of multi-plate color etchings in this country. Mary Cassatt’s color etchings may have influenced him. Charles Mielatz was a member of the New York Etching Club and elected an Associate Member of the National Academy in 1906. He succeeded James David Smillie as the etching teacher at the National Academy, a position he held for 15 years. He died in New York City on June 2, 1919. This piece will be a museum quality addition to any collection of American Art and will display beautifully in any decor: Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, Americana, Southern – Florida, Eames Era, Shabby Chic, or Contemporary. I always respond quickly! This object comes from a smoke-free, pet-free environment. Thank you for looking! This item is in the category “Art\Art Prints”. A Fabulous 1920’s Antique Red Vase. Collectors of Consolidated / Phoenix Glassware know that red pieces are very rare and desirable! This wonderful Bittersweet Vase is believed to be the work of Reuben Haley as part of the much sought-after Martele Line. It measures about 9-5/8″ tall and 5-1/4″ wide. The opening is about 3-1/4 wide. My grandmother was a well-known life-long antique glass collector here in Minnesota. In the 1970’s, she gave this vase to my mother, who is also an antique glass collector. The color is a deep ruby red or pigeon blood color. There are bubbles inside the glass, and a few other manufacturing inconsistencies, which attest to the age and authenticity of this piece. There is very minor wear and a couple tiny pinpricks along the rim, from years of careful enjoyment. Nothing interferes with the beauty of this piece. An essential item for a serious collector. See my other auctions and save more! This item is in the category “Pottery & Glass\Decorative Pottery & Glassware\Vases”. The seller is “makehappytime” and is located in this country: US. RARE SUBSTANTIAL HISTORIC INDUS VALLEY EARLY HARAPPAN TERRACOTTA ZEBU BULL FIGURINE. In “original” excavated none cleaned condition! Please view my other items! Weight – 73.8 grams. Size – 7.5 cm. Polychrome Indus Valley terracotta statuette of a Zebu bull. The animal is depicted in a naturalistic manner, with eyes, large hump and tall antlers. The anatomical features are emphasized by stripes of black pigmentation. The Indus Valley Civilisation extended from what today is north east Afghanistan to Pakistan and north west India. It was one of three early and widespread cradles of civilisation along with Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. At its peak, the Indus Valley Civilisation, which included such sites as Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, may have had a population of over five million, who developed new techniques in pottery, seal carving, and metallurgy. The Indus Valley statuettes are known to be quite detailed and realistically shaped. On top of anatomically depicted anthropomorphic statuettes, bulls and elephants were among the most represented both as figurines and pottery’s decorations. Harappan people produced a large number of terracotta figurines, which were handmade. Terracottas were made up of fire baked earthen clay which came to be called as Terracotta Figurines. They were either used as toys or objects of worship. Harappa is an archaeological site in Punjab, Pakistan, about 24 km (15 mi) west of Sahiwal. The site takes its name from a modern village located near the former course of the Ravi River which now runs 8 km (5.0 mi) to the north. The current village of Harappa is less than 1 km (0.62 mi) from the ancient site. Although modern Harappa has a legacy railway station from the British Raj period, it is a small crossroads town of 15,000 people today. This item is in the category “Antiques\Other Antiques”. The seller is “1813waterloo” and is located in this country: AU. This item can be shipped worldwide.
