Both painting plaques are the same size and framed in same size frames as well. Stunning antique Chinese ancestral portrait pair of early 20th century, original ink on ceramic panels with makers mark. These type of portraits are extremely rare in blue & white and also portraits are extremely rare to be drawn on ceramic panels. These are depicting an emperor and empress/elite official and wife seated on thrones. Amazing attention to detail is seen throughout the paintings.. The official painted in formal garb with robes, seated on a throne on a floral carpet, the official’s wife depicted wearing an elaborate headdress and a elaborate robes, seated on a throne and flower carpet, each framed in an Asian inspired frame with a brass Chinese patterned hook at the top for hanging. The frame consist of 3 layers and the inner most layer, a tiny black frame continues on to a broader red orange polished wooden frame thats grounded with another black outer layer. The frame complements extremely well with the blue and white painting plaques. The contrast between the frame and the ceramic plaque provides a vibrant pop of color to suit any interior. These will can be combined with the blue and white Chinese ceramics alongside. These paintings will ground a traditional or a modern interior space with its stately and formal appearance. Provenance: Private collection Scotland U. 49cm x 36.5cm. Condition: In excellent condition. Vibrant with pop of color. Extract from National Museum of Asian Art. In China, ancestor worship has long been considered a cornerstone of the culture. Rituals dedicated to the ancestors were meant to honor them and ensure that the ancestors spirits would bestow blessings of health and prosperity on their descendants. Portraits of deceased parents and forebears have served as a focus for these private family rituals since the 16th century. Before the invention of the camera, painting was the only method available to capture and record a face for posterity. In modern times, photography has for the most part replaced paintings as a means of recording images of family members. This exhibition therefore provides a rare opportunity to discuss this vanishing form of memorial portraiture, its techniques and practices, while also analyzing the costumes, rugs, furniture and jewelry of the period described. Historically, ancestor portraits were kept in the family and rarely exhibited publicly. Many portraits reached the marketplace, following the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911 and during the political upheaval and war with Japan that occurred during the first half of the 20th century.
