Very Rare Pair Of Original Early 20th Century Black Forest Wood Bear Armchairs
Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale. Stunning and exceptionally rare pair of original hand carved in Black Forest wood very large Bear armchairs. A collectable and signature pair of art furniture armchairs. This pair are exceptional, they date to the early 20. Century circa 1920, they are hand carved from solid slabs of black forest wood timber. Black forest wood gets its name from the darkness of the timber, this is due to the trees being naturally grown very closely, they are very tall meaning no light reaches the timber giving it this wonderful colour. This pair came to me in need of some sympathetic conservation, they had been coated is some kind of thick sticky dark wax which hid the natural colour and timber patina, we have painstakingly removed this substance to reveal the natural colour of the wood and grain. We have then very lightly wax sealed, and hand polished them from top to bottom, the finished result is pretty much the best-looking pair of these chairs you will ever find. They have old repairs here and there, nothing you would not expect from 100+ year old chairs that are this large and heavy. There are no losses or structural issues whatsoever they are a very fine example. Seat height:- 43cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements, please ask. Black Forest Carving History. In the 1800s the wood carving industry of Switzerland started in the town of Brienz. By the end of the 1800s it had become the driving force for this industry. Swiss wood carvers became world renown and featured at many international exhibitions. Here is a shortlist of the major exhibitions Black Forest Carvings were spotlighted. Great Exhibition, London (1851). Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia (1876). Chicago Worlds Fair, Chicago (1893). Exposition Universelle, Paris (1900). In Europe Black Forest carvings (wares) became a symbol of luxury and wealth. The finest pieces of Black Forest carving were often found in Royal collection and elite collectors homes (usually Victorian world travellers). There was a high demand for these carving especially depicting American Wildlife. Here are some of the American animals that were highly sought after: Bears, Stags, Eagles, Boars and Dogs. In the last 15 years this genre has seen some major changes. Specialty auctions and dealers have been popping up worldwide. Along with various books on the subject being published. The biggest misconception about Black Forest carvings is that they originated in Germany. However, they are actually the creation of Swiss carvers. Royal House Antiques is a privately owned family ran business founded in Wimbledon SW19 and now based in Pulborough RH20. We specialise in finding, restoring very fine luxury antique leather seating, along with every single other type of antique ranging from the 16. Century to the 20. Rare Early 18th Century All Wood Foot Warmer W Unusual Side Door Opening & Pan
Early 18th century foot stove / foot warmer. Early example and rare to be made all of wood rather than the usual tin panels. I believe it to be made of cherry wood, and it is constructed with square nails. Unique and unusual to have a slide up lid opening on the side wall. Wonderful to have the original sheet iron liner pan still inside. The pan is even well made with a nice finger ring handle. The top of the warmer has a swing handle, and it is perforated on all sides with holes for decoration and also to let the heat out. It measures 6 5/8 inches tall by 9 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches. Excellent condition , all complete. Rare early and unusual example, perfect to add to any early primitive collection. Thick, sturdy and quite weighty. Similar example can be referenced in G Neumanns book Early American Antique Country Furnishings , pg 327. The item “Rare Early 18th Century All Wood Foot Warmer W Unusual Side Door Opening & Pan” is in sale since Tuesday, May 25, 2021. This item is in the category “Antiques\Primitives”. RARE LENOX SOAP EARLY 20TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE BLACK INK STAMPED SIDEWALL GRAPHIC ICONOGRAPHY, WOOD BOX ADVERTISING CRATE, with NATURAL DRY, MATTE ORIGINAL WOOD SURFACES, by PROCTOR & GAMBLE, CINCINNATI, OHIO. [Featuring Proctor & Gamble’s crescent moon hallmark]. Early 20th century Ame ri can antique wood box advertising crates & soap boxes. 8 14″ Height x 15 12″ Depth x 19 Width. For sale is this incredible and absolutely untouched, original and completely authentic, Proctor and Gamble of Cincinnati, Ohio, early 20th century vintage Lenox Soap wood crate advertising box, featuring black ink stamped sidewall graphic iconography on two long and one short sidewalls, early nailed corners and a wood plank floor. The black ink is original and still largely saturated and opaque. The wood surfaces haven’t been lacquered or varnished and have a matte, dry finish. There’s only the slightest bit of wood loss along the top right corner of one of the long wooden sidewalls. This amounts to what would be best described as a sliver of wood and not a chunk. The wood has naturally aged patina and its wood cover was pried off with a crow bar. The damage to the long sidewall most likely occurred when the wood box crate was initially opened. One long sidewall has great graphics with a hand holding a bar of Lenox soap. The short sidewall has the Proctor and Gamble crescent moon hallmark stamped on it. Good to Very Good overall vintage condition. The item “RARE LENOX SOAP EARLY 20TH C ANTIQUE WOOD BOX ADVERTISING CRATE PROCTOR & GAMBLE” is in sale since Monday, April 12, 2021.
