ANTIQUE FAMILY HOLY BIBLE SALESMAN SAMPLE CIRCA LATE 1800s/Early 1900s RARE
Posted by admin On July 21, 2018
No date I could find, but likely late 1800s/early 1900s. Includes specimen pages of the new and devotional and practical pictorial family bible containing the old and new testaments…. Very interesting details throughout. All covers attached, tight and bright. Some wear to cover edges – see photos. Some pages a bit loose but all are intact. Most tissue papers covering B&W and Color illustrations are present. Some are not or have tears (see photo of one). Gilt edges with beautiful intricate, scalloped, gilt cover design with beveled cover edges. Back cover shows an alternative cover design – less gilt but still very detailed and scalloped – see last photo. Approximately 12-1/2″ x 10″ x 1-1/2 thick. Overall this is a very good example of this unique sample bible in great shape for its age and use. PAIR RARE LATE 18th-EARLY 19th C. PIETRA DURA HARD STONE / MARBLE CANDLE HOLDERS
Posted by admin On July 2, 2018
Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a very unusual pair of antique English Pietra Dura hard stone inlaid on marble candle holders. These unusual candle holders are made of black marble and feature the front panel with Pietra Dura hard stone decoration with beautiful coloration in the stones. Measure 10″ tall with the candle opening being 1″ in diameter and a base diameter of 4 square. Weight is 6.0 pounds. These gorgeous candlesticks have some minor nicks in the marble as expected with functional items of this age. The flaws are minor no-harm nicks around the bottom edge on corners and one candlestick has a small chip on the upper rim (see photos). The Pietra Dura inserts are in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. No other noted flaws. Felt cover on bases as found. This is certainly a UK piece made in Ashford Derbyshire during the 18/19th centuries. Similar pieces/styles in Chatsworth House, Derbyshire and go under the name Ashford Marble. Give away is the limestone coral inlay which is shown on the side of the piece – Italians so never had this sort of coral limestone. In Derbyshire it is very common and was turned into all sorts of architectural/monastic columns/items. The product is quite rare. Easy to check – Ashford marble is a natural bitumen filled marble (mined locally in Ashford under water) which takes a high polish when cut and burns when heated. Flat Italian pieces used a different stone with no bitumen. We at Antiques & Moore have been in the Antiques business for over 30 years and try to describe our items as accurately as possible. Extremely Rare Late 17th Early 18th Century Z Dutch Netherlands Marine Compass
Posted by admin On June 11, 2018
Extremely Rare Late 17th Early 18th Century Dutch Netherlands Marine Compass!!!! I say amaZingly because it is one of the most advanced designs of compasses for its time that I have come across! The needle is half white steel and half blackened steel, the white portion points North perhaps since Europeans are generally speaking white at that time, while the South is blackened since the south is primarily inhabited by darker folks, regardless the two different colors make it much easier and thus faster to differentiate between North and South, and the shape of the needle makes it much easier to follow even by someone with poor eye sight, extremely intelligent. Most likely created for the Dutch East India or Dutch West India Company, which could not function with-out such devices, the GPS of its time. It is the only compass I have eVer seen with a Z for south (Zuiden), which clearly and definitively indicate the compass is Dutch. The measurements of the wooden case are approximately 10.2 cm x 9.35 cm x 3.55 cm (4″ x 3 10.8/16″ x 1 6.5/16). The brass ring surrounding the compass is approximately 8.75 cm (3 7/16) in diameter. On the brass portion, the decorations, lines, and arabic numerals were all hand engraved by one of the worlds unknown but best compass makers I have eVer encountered. I have seen a Dutch? Compass, I inserted a question mark because the South was an S and not a Z, and of what I deem of much lesser quality fetch a sum of approximately 55 thousand USDs! So price-wise this beauty is a gift! The wooden case box is partially cracked on both sides, the crystal glass has some scratche s as can be observed on the upper right quadrant of the second image and the upper left quadrant of the 5th image , and some points of oxidation (darker colored areas), but remains a fully functional and beautiful compass worthy of any museum! A great addition to any museum quality marine or scientific collection! Definitely a gift for any high level intellectual mind! Please feel free to check out my other Museum Quality Collection! For the year of our Lord 2015 I wish you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
