Extremely Rare Early Chinese Jade Stamp Featuring A Qilin
Posted by admin On September 17, 2018
Qilin Mythical Creature Jade Stamp. Extra fine and extremely rare example of an early Chinese Jade stamp with a classic Qilin, or horned ridged backed scaled unicorn sitting atop. This example has a distinct segmented tapering horn that folds back from its forehead. Made of well patinated’Chicken Bone’ Jade. The carving on the bottom of the stamp is a mystery. The Qilin is known as a good omen thought to occasion prosperity or serenity. In legend, the Qilin first appeared in the 5th Century B. It is said that Emperor Wu of Han captured one in 122 B. From the weathered and aged surface appearance we believe this to be an example from the period. There are age cracks in the base that are completely stable and show no signs of repair. Some old red ink is embedded in the cracks and elsewhere on the stamp. It has been inspected by a geologist employing 100X magnification and it was determined that the stamp is in a condition completely consistent with and resultant of known natural geologic weathering and aging principles. Well patinated light gray/brown’Chicken Bone’ Jade. 3cm Tall x 2.8cm Square. __________________________________________________ Jackson’s On Main sells high quality art and antiquities at excellent prices from both our extensive collection and from the private collections of our clients and various estates. Rare 18th Century Early Meissen Antique German Porcelain Dove Pigeon Tureen
Posted by admin On September 15, 2018
RARE 18TH CENTURY EARLY MEISSEN ANTIQUE GERMAN PORCELAIN DOVE PIGEON TUREEN. EXCEPTIONALLY FINE AND RARE EARLY MEISSEN LIDDED SAUCE TUREEN. Presenting a magnificent 18th Century soft paste porcelain tureen and cover naturalistically modelled into the of a nesting dove / pigeon. This exceptional example was produced by the quality German makers, Meissen, circa mid to late 1700s. The beautifully modelled dove is seated upon a basket moulded base with applied shredded clay foliage trimming the top of the nest. This piece is wonderfully finished in naturalistic glazes. This piece is presented in very good antique condition with some exceptionally minor losses to the shredded clay foliage noticeable only on extremely close examination but mentioned for complete accuracy. There appears to be a minor old repair to one side of the birds tail which has been professionally done and incredibly hard to spot. We had to take a magnifyer to the piece and even then it was hard to detect. There is a minuscule fleabite sized nibble to the top of the crest upon the birds head and the tiniest rough spot to the tip of the birds beak. There is some internal staining which we have not attempted to bleach out or remove in any way and should be able to be lessened in the new owners preferred manner. Light overall surface crazing mentioned for accuracy. This authentic antique example has survived exceptionally well and presents spectacularly. The unglazed base is beautifully marked with Meissen’s brushed blue crossed swords. This impressive piece stands approx 120mms tall, measures 195mms in length and 78mms in width. Early Meissen examples such as this fine figural tureen are highly desirable and feature in top Museum collections. This stunning piece would make an outstanding addition to any early Meissen, quality antique porcelain or figural tureen collection!
