SCARCE EARLY to MID 20TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE HAND CARVED CHESTNUT WOODEN ROPE BED TIGHTENER, with 2-PIECE CONSTRUCTION, FEATURING DOWELED. HANDLED & SPOKED, TOOTHED TURNIN G. END & ROPE CLASP. [2-piece construction with doweled handle removable from main wooden shaft]. Early to mid 19th century Ame ri can antique New England hand carved chestnut wood bet tighteners. 17 1/2″ Height x 13 1/2″ Width (handle). Body: 2″ Width x 2 1/4″ Depth. Bottom spoked end: 3″ Height x 3/4″ gap Width. Offered for your review and consideration is this early to mid 19th century Ame ri can antique primitive hand carved chestnut rope bed tightener or bed screw turn. It was recently discovered here in southern New Hampshire during an estate clean-out of an early residence with an attached barn and carriage sheds. It is a true New England primitive hand tool, completely fashioned by hand and made from local chestnut wood, once prevalent in the northeast and found all over New England before it suffered blight. The rope bed turn screw is comprised of two parts, the carved chestnut, sturdy doweled handle which inserts into the main, spoked end chestnut shaft. The’T’ shaped design would allow the user to insert the key onto the looped rope in the rope bed’s side board and turn it, tightening it to give better support to the goose feather down or straw filled linen mattresses of that era. The beds would have carved wood nuts to hold them into the newly tightened position. Good to Very Good overall antique condition. This item is in the category “Antiques\Primitives”. From the early 19th century Massachusetts’ Atlantic coastal town of Salisbury, Massachusetts with love, from between 185 to 220 years ago, comes this exciting, recently discovered, deep emerald green enamel, hand painted and gold gilt hand lettered, Ame ri can antique New England primitive leather fire bucket, from around the time of the War of 1812, or shortly thereafter. Just recently found in an early southeastern New Hampshire post and beam home, this rare antique leather fire bucket is as it was when it was unearthed in the home, where it had been for literally centuries or as long as anyone in the home was aware of. The bucket’s sidewalls feature 100% original period, hand painted surfaces and dry, matte finish. The fire bucket has no sidewall’pushes,’ deformities, dents or dings. The leather wrap on the wound hemp rope handle has moderate loss at and around the apex of the looped handle. It also doesn’t have any leather tears or deep, noticeable abrasions. The hand painted and hand lettered typography is now reduced by previous exposure to the soot of previous fires and from the effects of light and of time. The surfaces haven’t been artificially enhanced with lacquer or cleaned. This wonderful early 19th century Ame ri can antique New England primitive, hand decorated leather fire bucket remains untouched and unrestored and in 100% original estate condition. Condition great untouched original surface. 733h Sleep tight and dont let the bed bugs bite developed from the days when these were used. RARE Early Antique COLONIAL ROPE BED TIGHTENER, Hand CARVED From Wood, Hearth

RARE 1770 – 1800 Hand-Made Wooden Tightener Used to Tighten Ropes/Mattress in a Colonial Rope Bed. Particularly rare, hand made, wooden rope tightener. Beds during the colonial period had ropes running in both directions, attached to the bed frame. This was in place of more modern steel springs, and supported the mattress (generally filled with hay during this period). With time, the ropes would loosen and the mattress would sag, and this tool was made by the farmer to tighten the ropes periodically. NOT SOMETHING THAT WAS USED AFTER ROPE BEDS WENT OUT ABOUT 1800, SO THEY TENDED TO BE DISCARDED OR MADE INTO SOMETHING ELSE. Therefore you will not see this original colonial wooden tool very often! Scans show it all. It is hand made of hard maple, to provide strength and protect against the stresses of turning and tightening. It also has 2 ANTIQUE IRON NAILS going through it in each direction again to add reinforcement and added strength. It is nicely hand planed along the surfaces, with hand-mitered/whittled edges. The large U-shaped part at one end was chiselled/carved out. This was meant to put over the ropes and pull them together, and tightening them, to provide a tighter, flatter surface. The hole at the top would have a large dowel or stick put through it, the ends of which provided the handholds to turn the main shaft. Most of the ones you see are missing the dowel, as it was cannibalized for some other project after rope beds were no longer used, or they simply broke during use due to the stresses put into the rope tightening. This one is about 14″ long and about 2″ on each side. Nice early wood patina and appearance. EVEN STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL CORD USED TO HANG IT FROM A HOOK ON THE WALL. Came out of an early Revolutionary War Period Massachusetts estate. Would make a great colonial or hearth or kitchen or early bedroom decorator. You can obviously also use it with your antique rope bed if you have one.
