Offered for sale is this outstanding antique original brass Persian Islamic Bedouin Astrolabe, being 5 1/2 in diameter, signed by the maker, with Arabic and Zodiac engraving all over the front and back of this instrument. We believe the circa to be early 17th centaury. This old astrolabe is guaranteed to be an authentic antique. Astrolabes are dated at 570 AD to coincide with the birth of Mohamad which was 570 AD. The tribe master looked up at the stars for the big dipper. After finding the big dipper, he followed the handle which pointed to the north star. Having found the north star, he then knew which way was north. He always used the instrument at night because it was too hot during the day, and the big dipper and the north star was not visible during daylight hours. The Persian Astrolabe is a historical astronomical instrument used by classical astronomers and astrologers. Brass astrolabes were developed in much of the eastern world, chiefly as an aid to navigation and as a way of finding the qibla, the direction of Mecca. A contemporary of John Burt who designed and created a caster for David’s son William and his wife-to-be, must have been quite an honor! Northey has pieces at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the famous silver collection at Yale University. In addition, he was master to his children who became well-known silversmiths-a family of makers! The delicate shellback which remains largely intact as far as wear goes, makes this wonderful spoon special, indeed. It remains in good antique condition (see exceptions in the condition description) with age appropriate wear, and bears a monogram EC to the handle. This is certainly a collector’s find! Perhaps one of the earliest Item I have ever acquired in my 30 years of collecting, is this very early mid 1700s +- gothic wiccan witch carved early oak witch figure. Combined patina, subject matter and its attire are just a few clues to its genuine period timeframe, appears in the form of a perhaps male witch sorta form, notice the cloak garment to go along with the pre colonial hat. The carved wood is very early oak with its early original patina, no signs of residue or clues suggesting it was part of something other than a hanging shelf. It is what it is, one of them items that we just don’t find anymore and a true one of a kind, view my several pics to assess. PS: Carving stands approx. This 18th century blacksmith made wrought iron candlestick is of European original origin; French or English, and brought over to America by immigrants. This was another great example of early lighting we have acquired from a collector who specialized in lighting and had assembled his collection decades ago. As you can see the piece has an adustable mechanism to the formation of the candle shaft, allowing the user to raise up the candle via the curled tabbed slider. Has a wonderful tri-legged design underneath a circular “up turned” drip pan. Retains the original top hook that would allow the piece to be transported or hung off the back of a chair when not placed atop a table. Some pitting expected for age. Candleshaft has a very slight tilt to it. All signs of age point to usage and expected wear from age. Stands approx 7 3/4 tall. Note the square nut and slightly out of round rivet to the bottom construction.
