A rarely seen, early miniature Steiff velvet dog made in a begging position. Known as Teo, he still has his underscored’ff’ earbuton c. 1908, and sits 10 cms (4) high. All original, except for his neck ribbon, Teo has tiny black bead eyes, and an embroidered mouth with some faint red airbrushing above it. Woodwool-stuffed, there’s some slight settlement to his right ankle, so he needs a little persuasion to sit on his hind legs. But once erect, he usually stays that way and doesn’t topple over! There’s a scrap of his original collar remaining, along with strands of neck cord and, overall, he’s in good hound dog condition, with just a patch of discolouration to his back. This cute diddy character travels with his homemade velvet cushion, and is shown with his feline friend Tabitha, available in a separate listing. An extremely rare pair of adorable, velvet Steiff Treff bloodhounds c. Made in a sitting position with jointed heads, Baby Treff still has her earbutton with scrap of stock tag, while Mummy Treff only has two ear slits where her missing button was positioned. Being larger, at 15 cms (6) high, she has the distinctive Treff’droopy-eye’ design, whereby her back-painted glass eyes are embedded in sockets and surrounded by velvet eyelids. Steiff actually patented this slanting, half-covered construction, and also used a similar design for their Jocko chimp. In the distant past, her original hand-embroidered nose has had some extra stitches added, but her embedded glass eyes are both oriignal, though one has been re-attached at some point. There’s a little wear to her sockets/eyelids, but her neck joint works fine. Stuffed with a mix of woodwool and kapok, Mummy Treff’s beige velvet plush is in lovely condition, with minimal wear and just a couple of small repairs. It’s taken on a pale greenish hue over the years, mostly to her muzzle, but isn’t actually as green as it appears in my photos. She has a teasing red airbrushed mouth, and faint muzzle’freckles’, along with endearingly-long floppy ears. Overall, Mummy is amazingly well-preserved for her age. Originally, Treffs wore large pastel-coloured ribbons, but Mummy now has a posh leopard-print velvet collar with bell, same as her Baby. Baby Treff sits 10 cms (4) high and is all original with the Steiff button under her floppy ear. She has amber back-painted glass eyes and a black-emboidered nose. Her neck joint has stiffened up over time, and can no longer be swivelled due to the fragility of her velvet plush at the back, which has been secured with stitching (see pic). Generally, much of her velvet naP has worn away, and shows some patchy discolouration. Also, the internal wire in one of her hind legs is showing through her foot by way of a tiny hole. However, despite Baby Treff’s wear and tear, she remains in reasonably good condition and on the whole is a sturdy, and very cute, little character.
