A striking and highly sculptural early wooden plough stock, hand carved from a single piece of elm, displaying a powerful organic form and exceptional aged surface. The sweeping asymmetric wing, faceted hand-tool shaping and deep patina give the piece a strong visual presence-functionally driven yet almost abstract in appearance. It stands equally well as a piece of vernacular sculpture or primitive design object. This is not a later Victorian factory-made plough component, but a substantially earlier example of rural craftsmanship, hand-formed from a naturally curved compass timber using adze and axe. The construction and material are consistent with pre-industrial agricultural practice. The form represents a transitional development between the simple ard (scratch plough) and later swing-plough types. Of particular interest is the pronounced wing, which retains a rebate and fixing holes indicating it was originally fitted with an extended iron cutting edge. This suggests a more advanced soil-working function than basic early plough forms. The current iron tip/share is an old working-life replacement, indicating the piece remained in use and was repaired over time. The timber has been identified as elm, historically favoured for plough stocks due to its resistance to splitting and suitability for complex carved forms. Dating: Probably 17th to 18th century in manufacture, with continued use and repair into the 19th century. Condition: Honest age and agricultural wear throughout. Surface abrasion, shrinkage cracking and historic repairs consistent with long-term use. It has been oiled at some point. 25 x 14 x 7 inches. A rare survival of early agricultural craftsmanship with strong sculptural qualities-ideal for collectors of vernacular antiques, treen, primitive artefacts or interior display.

VERY EARLY ANTIQUE TREEN WOODEN BUTTER ROLLER – RARE. Dating from late 18. Century, a beautiful, time aged hardwood roller. With its more unusual and substantial longer handle, which indicates both early manufacture and that it would have been used in a dairy to afford more durability. Far rarer than later models. ANTIQUE TREEN CRACKER BISCUIT PRICKER ROLLING PIN EARLY WOOD WIRE GADGET. This is the most unusual rare handmade treen rolling cracker/biscuit pricker I’ve ever had the pleasure to list. Nice large scale piece is approximately 8″ wide and 10″ long from top of handle to bottom of roller. It is in good primitive condition with the usual anticipated nicks and some wood cracking. There are about 6 spikes that are worn down on one edge of the roller. See photos to determine the condition. Don’t hesitate on this super rare item – you’ll likely never see another one.

C1830 Treen Lignum Vitae Early Go To Bed Match Protector & Striker. Very early go to bed match striker protector circa 1830. Beautiful lignum vitae wood. No external striker, instead two discs (below the bone finial) lined with glass paper. The upper disc lifts so that a match can be inserted and moved to create the friction to light. Overall in good antique condition, screw thread good, some losses to the decorative petal detail, otherwise expect marks, general signs of wear and use commensurate with age and nature of item. Rare Antique Early 19th Century Child’s Miniature Treen Knitting Sheath, Initialled’M. These sewing tools were found mainly in rural areas in Wales, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Scotland and Northumberland, the majority were made in wood; but other materials included leather, metal, bone, straw and quills. They were used by placing the end of the stick against the right hand hip, tucked into the waistband, or belt, at an angle, so a double ended knitting needle could be placed in the hole, at the opposite end, which was about 1 deep. This secured the knitting needle, and freed the right hand so the knitter could knit at speed, also whilst standing or walking. This charming example is rare in its miniature child size and is engraved with the child’s initials. Condition is good, commensurate with and use. Lovely patina to the wood!
