A very rare pair of Japanese Cloisonne vases in the manner of early works by Namikawa Yasuyuki. In the early stage of Namikawa’s career sometome in the 1870s, he was known to develop a complex translucent enamel technique over copper which produced the orange/red type enamel referred to as cuprite. Published research and similar examples of this type lead to a potential attribution. The vase form adds to the rarity. Possibly candlesticks or given the Buddhist motifs, it’s possible they were for flower vases on an Altar display in a Buddhist temple. 18 cm // 7 inches height There are some condition issues, notably around the mouth rim of one vase. Age related surface wear and imperfections. Please review all photographs.

Rare Antique Eton Fives Wooden Rackets Early School Sports Pair Display/Study
Rare pair of early Eton Fives wooden rackets, traditionally used in the historic school sport associated with Eton College. These examples likely date from the early-mid 20th century and still retain their original natural gut stringing. Eton Fives equipment from this era is highly uncommon, as the sport was played at only a handful of English public schools and later evolved into a handball-style game without rackets. Early rackets like these were produced in very small numbers, making surviving examples sought after for collectors of school memorabilia and antique sporting equipment. Both rackets show age-related wear, flaking paint around the throat, and broken/deteriorated gut strings (see photos). Ideal as decorative pieces, museum-style display, or study items for those interested in English school sports history. See photos for measurements.

Beautiful near matched pair of late Georgian/ early Victorian Minton porcelain encrusted “Florist” vases, dating to around 1830. Highly decorative and richly detailed, each vase features hand-applied floral encrustation, trellis-moulded necks, rococo scroll bases, and fine hand-painted panels-one with flowers, the other with exotic birds. These labour-intensive pieces represent some of Minton’s finest early 19th-century work. The applied flowers, gilding, and painting all show excellent skill and craftsmanship. A very attractive surviving pair. Maker: Minton, possibly Coalbrookdale. Date: c. As is typical for encrusted Minton. Expected small chips/losses to applied flowers. No obvious cracks or structural repairs. Hand-painted panels remain bright and detailed. Gilding in good order. One vase has slightly more flower losses than the other Overall an attractive and rare near pair.

A rare pair of early 20th-century Art Deco candle holders made with one of the world’s first plastics – Galalith, a material even older than Bakelite. Galalith was invented in Germany around 1900, created from casein (milk protein) and formaldehyde, and quickly became prized for its elegant, marble-like finish and organic origin. Unlike later plastics, Galalith was not molded by heat – it was cut, turned, and polished by hand, which gives every piece its own pattern and texture. We performed several careful tests to confirm authenticity: – No reaction to Bakelite polish paste, which is expected for Galalith; – When lightly warmed, a clear scent of old soap appears – the distinctive hallmark of genuine milk-based plastic; – The surface shows fine natural flow lines and depth typical of early casein plastic; – A single green section weighs about 173 grams, consistent with the density of Galalith. These results leave no doubt: the material is authentic Galalith, produced during the early era of plastic innovation, before 1920s Bakelite manufacturing began. The bases and mounts are made of gilded metal, designed in the refined Art Deco style. Each candle holder stands approximately 17 cm tall with a base of about 11 cm in diameter.
