Rare Early 18thC Norwegian Treen Folk Art Washing Bat Banketre- Dated 1710
Rare & Authentic 1710 Norwegian Folk Art Washing Bat (Banketre)Up for sale is an exceptional piece of early 18th-century Scandinavian folk art. This authentic Norwegian washing bat (banketre) was hand-carved in 1710, a time when rural communities in Norway handcrafted highly decorative utilitarian tools as courting gifts or wedding tokens. Design & Artistry:The face of the paddle features a beautifully preserved, compass-drawn six-petal geometric rosette (sekstannet rosett). This timeless motif was traditionally carved into household objects to bring good luck and ward off misfortune. Elegantly carved directly inside the center of the geometric knot is the clear presentation year: 1710. Minor surface bumps, scuffs, and historical pitting consistent with domestic utility usage in the 1700s. The structural integrity is stable, and it has not been treated with modern waxes or commercial chemicals, preserving its authentic, bare-aged wood finish. From google reverse image search. This is a vintage Scandinavian wooden laundry tool, specifically a washing bat (known as a banketre in Norwegian), traditionally used in 19th-century domestic laundering to beat and extract water or dirt from wet clothes. Design and Carving: Hand-carved from hardwood with a spade-like paddle and a short handle grip, featuring geometric incised or compass-drawn circular motifs. Folk Art Tradition: These utilitarian pieces of treen were often inscribed with initials or dates as courting gifts or wedding tokens in rural Norway and Scandinavia. If you’d like, I can help you:Research the symbolism of the geometric rosette or knot carvings. Find information on dating and valuing antique Scandinavian treen. The text inside the carving shows the year 1710. This means the washing bat is an authentic piece of early 18th-century Scandinavian folk art (treen). Significance of the InscriptionDating: It places the creation of the piece in the late Baroque period. Courting Gift: In rural Scandinavia, young men often spent winters carving beautiful household tools like this for their sweethearts. The date commemorates the year it was presented. This is fitting for museum collections with similar 18th-century Norwegian or Swedish laundry paddles. That confirms it is a classic Norwegian banketre (washing bat). Pieces like this from the very early 1700s are highly prized examples of traditional Norwegian wood carving (treutskjæring). Regional and Historical ContextThe 1710 Era: During this time, Norway was in a dual-monarchy with Denmark. In rural valleys, remote communities relied heavily on self-sufficiency, leading to highly developed, distinct regional styles of decorative folk art. The Rosette Motifs: The compass-drawn circular pattern shown in your image was one of the most common geometric symbols used across Norwegian folk textiles and woodwork. It is often referred to locally as a sekstannet rosett (six-pointed rosette). PLEASE SEE PHOTOS WHICH FORM ITEM DESCRIPTION.

Rare 17th / Early 18thC Antique European Folk Art Wooden Crucifix Cross Jesus
Overview? An exceptional, highly atmospheric late 17th or early 18th-century Continental European devotional crucifix. This authentic piece of historic folk art showcases incredible age, an untouched crusty patina, and deep religious character. Featuring unique pre-industrial craftsmanship, it stands on its original multi-tiered “Golgotha” wooden base. Design & Iconography? The Corpus: Features a striking, elongated hand-carved wooden figure of Christ with a Jansenist-influenced vertical arm posture, characteristic of 17th-century theological artistry. The torso and loincloth show beautifully raw, provincial carving details. The Details: Adorned with a hand-painted “INRI” titulus scroll at the apex and a unique, jagged sheet metal (tin/iron) radiating halo/glory behind the head and cross joints. The Wood: The reverse reveals beautifully aged, hand-riven/hand-hewn timber showing historic adze or drawknife marks. The unpainted wood on the back has oxidized over centuries to a rich, warm honey-brown hue. Condition Report? Surface: Magnificent, untouched original condition with extensive “alligatoring” (square cracking) to the old painted gesso surface. The deep, dark patina is completely authentic, built up from centuries of exposure to candlelight and environment. Structure: The piece is stable on its layered, block-constructed wooden base. There are ancient, entirely inactive woodworm flight holes on the reverse, adding to its genuine antiquity. Historic Repairs: As is common with devotional items of this age, this piece has been loved and maintained over generations. There are early-to-mid 20th-century flat-head slot screws carefully stabilizing the hands and feet to the cross where the original ancient glue/fasteners naturally failed. The tin halo elements remain attached via irregular, hand-forged blacksmith tacks.

Rare Late 18th Early 19th Century Dutch Brass Whale Oil Lamp Repousse Folk Art
Rare Late 18th Early 19th Century Dutch Brass Whale Oil Lamp. Nice example of the rarer Repousse type. Does have the lower spout missing but even a novice metalworker could replace the missing one with simple sheet brass and a little soldering, which is all it would have been in the first place. Interesting and underated these things as they are quite ingenious being able to free stand and be hung up and the flattened off back to the base ensures the lighted wick is kept away from the wall as far as possible. Dia of abase approx 11.5cm. Very good See photos.

Rare Antique Early Primitive 1800's Pierhead Portrait Schooner Nautical Folk Art
This is an exceptional piece of early 1800’s (circa 1815) oil on canvas American nautical folk art. Depicts a two-masted schooner with an American flag flying, depicted in a harbor scene. Age related damage including one larger patch of damage to the canvas measuring just under three-quarters of an inch (see last photographs). The frame is newer, most likely under 100 years-old. Label on canvas is from Dan C. Caldwell, a general store in Russell, KY, purveyors of books, stationary, paints, oils, brushes, cigars and tobacco, wall paper, etc. The canvas currently does not sit flush in the frame in one corner, but that could be remedied. Canvas measures 27″ x 22″ and frame measures 32″ x 27.5″.
