This great piece of mocha decorated yellowware is a tea bowl. During the 1700s and early 1800s tea was an expensive commodity and after tea was brewed, the tea leaves would be saved in tea bowls for use the next use. Tea bowls have a unique shape, they always have flat sloped sides that angle down to a rounded raised foot, and with no rim like other bowls. Rare Art Deco Antique Asian Siam Silver Black Red Enamel Cigarette Case
An exceptional example of early 20th-century luxury, this elegant 1920s silver cigarette case is a remarkable survivor, preserved in extraordinary, virtually unused condition for over a century. Accompanied by its original fitted presentation box, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the refined tastes of the Royal Court of Siam and the elite society of the period. The exterior is beautifully decorated with bold, fluted vertical bands, expertly enameled in alternating jet black and vivid crimson red, creating a striking Art Deco-inspired design that remains as brilliant today as when it was first crafted. Opening the case reveals a luxurious rich gold-washed interior, a hallmark of fine silver craftsmanship reserved for high-quality pieces. Inside is a charming hand-inscribed dedication reading, “To Effie my dear’little’ friend – Akas, ” adding a personal touch and a tangible connection to its original owner. Although the cigarette case bears no maker’s mark or silver purity hallmark, this is entirely consistent with many pieces of fine Asian silver produced during this era. The original presentation box provides compelling evidence of its provenance, being printed for the Jewellers & Watchmakers to the Court of Siam, Bangkok (present-day Thailand). Such a prestigious retailer supplied the Royal Court and the country’s wealthy elite, suggesting this was a costly commission rather than an item produced for export. The exceptional craftsmanship, luxurious gold wash, and high-quality construction indicate the silver is approximately sterling grade. The case weighs an impressive 160 grams and measures 3.25 inches deep, 2.5 inches wide, and 0.75 inch high. Please note, this case was designed for shorter, vintage-style cigarettes and does not accommodate modern credit cards. We encourage you to review the listed dimensions carefully to ensure it suits your intended use, particularly if you plan to store items of a specific size. Please refer to the detailed photos for a complete condition assessment. Together with its original presentation box, it represents an outstanding acquisition for collectors of fine Asian silver, Art Deco accessories, tobacciana, or rare objects associated with the Royal Court of Siam. Perhaps most remarkable is its state of preservation. The cigarette case appears to have never been used, having remained protected in its presentation box for more than 100 years. As a result, the enamel retains its crisp brilliance, while the interior remains bright and beautifully preserved-a rare level of originality seldom encountered. Elegant, historically significant, and preserved in extraordinary condition, this museum-worthy cigarette case is a superb testament to the artistry and luxury of early 20th-century Bangkok. Jackfield pottery marks are often minimal or absent on classic pieces, relying more on distinctive features like rich, glossy black glaze, reddish earthenware, gilding/enamel, and specific shapes (like three-footed items); marks, when present, are usually late Victorian or later, including factory names like Maw & Co. Or registration numbers (like Rd117962), as the original 18th-century production from Shropshire was largely unmarked. Key Identifying Features (Unmarked Pieces). Color & Glaze were usually deep, lustrous, almost metallic black glaze, sometimes with hints of purple or red. The body terracotta or reddish earthenware, appearing pale or buff in later periods and decoration faded oil gilding, cold enamels (pale blue/white), or slip designs (floral/foliate). Early items often have three feet or press molded. Unglazed or clear-glazed bases are common. Most authentic early Jackfield ware c. Later Victorian or revival pieces might bear factory names like Maw & Co. Many Staffordshire potters (like Thomas Whieldon) also made “Jackfield-type” ware. The original Jackfield, Shropshire, production peaked in the mid-18th century; later items are often “Jackfield-type” or revivals. Jackfield pottery, originating in Jackfield, Shropshire, England, from the 1713 founding by Richard Thursfield, is famous for its lustrous, highly vitrified black earthenware decorated with oil-gilded flowers and figures, mirroring Japanese lacquerware. While the original pottery thrived in the mid-18th century, the style saw revivals, with later production shifting heavily towards high-quality decorative tiles by companies like Craven Dunnill and Maw & Co, making Jackfield a significant center for tiles, including those used in famous buildings and the London Underground, with some production continuing today. Key Periods & Characteristics. The iconic black-glazed earthenware (Jackfield Ware) was made by the Thursfield family, sometimes featuring Jacobite inscriptions and oil-gilding. Potters like Thomas Whieldon in Staffordshire also made similar “Jackfield-type” wares, often with redder clay. Victorian Era (19th Century). Production expanded significantly into tiles, becoming a major global supplier of decorative tiles, including encaustic tiles. 20th Century & Beyond. The manufacturing, including Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, continued until the 1970s, with specialist production for conservation and restoration (like for the Houses of Parliament) occurring even today. The village of Jackfield became a significant industrial hub for ceramics, supported by local clays, coal, and river transport on the River Severn. The history is preserved at the Jackfield Museum, part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums in the UK.
