Rare German wooden diptych sundial with an integrated compass, likely crafted by David Beringer in the late 18th to early 19th century. Many of his pieces were made for travelers who would need to use the sundial at different latitudes. This particular piece is unique in that all of the latitudes and cities listed are in North America. Most examples in museums and available for sale were made for use in Europe. This rectangular wooden diptych sundial consists of two pieces of boxwood joined with two metal pin hinges and two hook fasteners. A hook at the back holds the instrument open (at something less than 90 degrees) and one at the front holds it closed. Printed, hand-colored paper dials are pasted onto the inner surfaces with black ink colored with red, green, and yellow. On the front is a latitude table for 15 American cities from Annapolis to Williamsburg, and 3 Canadian cities, Halifax, Montreal and Quebec. On the inside reverse are holes for latitudes of 39, 36, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, snd 54 degrees. It also features a horizontal compass in the base. Beringer was one of the first compass makers to create out of wood and printed paper instead of ivory or other precious metals. This made his wares more affordable. His workshop flourished between about 1777 and his death in 1821, and his name became synonymous with portable, wooden diptych and cube sundials. The box measures approximately 2.5 inches by 1.5 inch and. The front top panel listing cities is slightly worn, affecting two of the listed cord as visible from photos. The bottom reverse panel has remnants of a name in ink, likely a former owner. Because they are old, they were used and will not look new or new-like. They likely show wear, fading, scratches, chips, cracks, past repair/restoration, original imperfections and/or damage from normal use. Significant issues are shown in photos. Examine photos carefully as they are part of the description. Imperfections were factored into pricing.

This rare antique early 19th century Sakuyuki Japanese terracotta water dropper is a unique piece from Japan. Made in the first quarter of the 19th century, this terracotta water dropper is an antique original that showcases the traditional Japanese sculpture and calligraphy artistry. It features a stunning sculpted foo dog along with large characters on each panel that are done in high relief. It is in great condition, has acquired a lovely patina from age, and measures 2 3/4 inche stall by 2 inches wide.

With its more unusual and substantial longer handle, which indicates both early manufacture and that it would have been used in a dairy to afford more durability. Far rarer than later models. Antique Rare c1816 Sunderland Pink Lustre Jug Early Scott Version Union Jack Peg Leg Sailors Toasting. A rare and highly evocative Sunderland pink lustre jug dating to circa 1816, produced during the earliest and most desirable period of North East English commemorative ceramics. Crafted in creamware and richly decorated with hand-applied pink lustre, this jug belongs to a particularly small and sought-after group of early “Scott Version” wares, created in the years immediately following the Napoleonic Wars when patriotic sentiment and romantic maritime literature were at their height. One side is printed with a mariner’s verse known to collectors as the Scott Version, a poetic variant influenced by the literary style popularised by Sir Walter Scott and his contemporaries. The wording differs from the more commonly encountered Sunderland verses of later decades, adopting a ballad-like cadence that reflects themes of faith, fate, and divine protection at sea. Framed within a delicate floral border, the verse remains clear and legible, functioning both as decoration and as a devotional prayer intended to safeguard sailors on their voyages. The opposing side features a lively and unusually detailed sailor scene that is rarely encountered at this early date. A group of sailors are shown toasting, smoking pipes, and celebrating around a drum in a moment of camaraderie and relief. One figure is depicted with a peg leg, an especially atmospheric and poignant detail that adds narrative depth and realism, hinting at the personal cost of naval service. Most striking of all, the merry trio of’jack-tars’ are shown posing proudly against a raised Union Jack, a rarely portrayed motif.
