Rare Antique Late 18th Early 19th Century Rat de Cave Iron Spiral Candlestick
Late 18th, Early 19th Century. Made of Iron with a fruitwood base. In reality this dates to around 1770 and most likely made in France. Lovely patina and perfect to go with oak and country furniture. These type of candlesticks were used as a portable candlestick that could also be hooked onto an a beam in a barn for safety rather than risk falling over if simply stood on the floor or beam. Or used in mining, hence the origins of the name. The candle could be set low inside the spiral and ten screwed up as the candle burned down so as to reduce the risk of the candle falling out and causing a fire. Very simple but very clever invention. Height approx 19.5cm. Dia of base approx 9cm. Please be your judge on condition.

After nearly 300 years the piece has survived in wonderful sound condition. The original black shagreen covering is all still present and in fine condition, the catch and lid mechanism all work perfectly. The solid silver applique work is in fine condition and has only one loss.

RARE VERY LARGE EARLY 18th. CENTURY HAND PAINTED DELFT VASE. This is a wonderful, early, and large 18th. Century hand painted blue and white Delft tin glazed vase of Dutch origin. In a very large shouldered ovoid Orientalist form with small collar rim it’s decorated with fine hand painted stylised images, in an Eastern manner, of a figure in a lake side scene to two panels, while the other two panels portray two figures on a bridge leading to a village. Each panel and shoulder is separated by Orientalist floral borders, while the base has Pieter Gerritsz’s under-glaze hand painted’PK’ mark – see photographs and details. It measures 13″ (33cm) x 8 1/2″ (22cm) W approx; and is in excellent condition for a piece of tin glazed faience of its age however, there are some small firing faults and light crazing, to report – see photographs and details. This is a lovely, large, and unusual Delft hand painted Orientalist vase with an interesting subject, which with a realistic, yet still low start price should get a good deal of interest from all collectors. THERE IS NO RESERVE ON THIS SALE. Almost everything I sell is in the condition I have bought it, unless otherwise stated, (I have learnt to my cost in the past not to tamper with an item), and therefore I have neither had items repaired nor restored. The closure end piece of wood does have some play from years of the stone pressing against. It will protrude about 1/2 and can be pressed back. I’ve provided pics of it in both positions. I believe a small piece of the top vent has come off which would have been attached to the end, and thus the reason for the slight play. Otherwise, it has beautiful age wear and rounded edges. Forged iron nails throughout. Great representation of an early and scarce style foot warmer. Measures: 10-1/4″L x 7-1/2″W x 3-1/4H. Please see pics as they are part of description as well. Rare Late 18th Early 19th Century Dutch Brass Whale Oil Lamp. Nice example of the rarer Repousse type. Does have the lower spout missing but even a novice metalworker could replace the missing one with simple sheet brass and a little soldering, which is all it would have been in the first place. Interesting and underated these things as they are quite ingenious being able to free stand and be hung up and the flattened off back to the base ensures the lighted wick is kept away from the wall as far as possible. Coffee Roaster – a rare antique hand-held wrought iron coffee bean roaster, believed to be Italian or of an Italian design (I recall seeing one of these in Italy) and dating from the 18th century or early 19th century. The ball-end is placed in the embers of the hearth, and turned frequently for an even roast. The piece measures 64cm long and the ball is about 12cm diameter. I’ve successfully roasted fresh coffee beans, then ground them in a manual grinder – all very satisfying. With some practice it delivers a smoky rich coffee – for a unique Capuccino before 10.30 only please… Neoplolitan standards must be maintained, or a cheeky machiato or espresso to accompany your afternoon fritelli venexiana standing at the banco, of course, an emotion best recollected in tranquility. It’s also a great mystery object talking-piece. The exterior has been given an ocassional light rub with bees wax to inhibit corrosion – a treatment I’m considering myself.
